I prefer a short cage myself - the shifting is very crisp - but it doesn't take up the slack or stretch as far as a long cage mech if you run a wide range of gears.

The size of the mech chose should depend on the Max no. of teeth you're going to encounter on yer chain rings, or the combination of front and rear

A short cage won't / shoudln't deal with a 44T big ring at the front

It depends on capacity, Measure capacity, then compare to the mech.

Details of this can be found inthe Workshop section here, or look on Sheldon Brown's site.

I prefer a short cage myself, theres less dangle to get tangled and the shifts are much smoother.

Aslong as ur not running the extreme crossover gears (and u shouldnt be doing it anyways) you'll not have any probs.
  • Well, I think I will go for long cage this time around thanks.

It would take a fellow Scotch to spot that
