Rides from Truro

Going to be spending a few days in Truro over Christmas. Anyone know any good 30-50 mile loops from there? Don't mind if they are flat or hilly.

  • Head west out of Truro to Chasewater, Redruth, Camborne then south picking up Helston to Penzance road. Continue all way to Penzance then through towards Lands End. Just prior to Sennen turn off towards Lands End airfield, through St Just and then just follow the North coast road past Zennor (fantastic stretch of coastline), skirt round St Ives, pick up north coast route again on the other side of Hayle and follow all the way to Perranporth before picking up road back into Truro.
There is a good cafe at Geevor tin mine with great views (between St Just and St ives), if you want to break for cake before hitting the hardest parts of the route. This is not a quick route at all but you will get some good climbs in the legs and be rewarded with some great scenery.

Thanks for this - sounds brilliant. What road do you recommend out of Truro? Are the A roads like the A390 (out of Truro), A394 (Helston - Penzance) and the A30 (Hayle to Truro) really busy or are they OK?

  • The A390 is the quickest way out of Truro but is quite busy. However, you are only on it for a couple of miles. From the top of Truro (just up from train station), turn right at roundabout onto A390. Continue for a couple of miles, past Treliske hospital until you hit a mini roundabout at Threemilestone where you turn left and head for Chasewater. Once through Chasewater, head through Redruth and though Camborne. You can turn off earlier on a couple of occasions for A394 but it will add a bit of mileage. Wherever you hit the A394, although there is reasonable traffic flow, it is quite a decent road to cycle, all the way to Penzance. Quite good to deviate off slightly and go through Marazion and follow road to Pz from there. Again, at Pz you can carry straight on for LE, but good to carry on along coast road to Newlyn, past my front door to Mousehole and then continue onto LE that way. Once you have started heading back east from LE avoid the main A30 and stay on North coast route as far as possible as it is pretty busy and far less scenic.
