Brakes

I don't know if it's just me getting used to them, or my brakes really have deteriorated, but...the brakes on my Giant SCR2 are so spongy that they're almost useless. I guess it makes me a better cyclist...I really have to preempt any potential obstacle, corner, turn etc!

But my question is, can anyone recommend an upgrade for them? They have to be long reach as SCRs can (and mine does) take mudguards.

Cheers

  • When was the last time you serviced/changed your cables?

    That's usually the culprit...

    Clean your pads/rims too.

Yep, new cables probably. But if you want something better/nicer looking the Shimano A550 long drop calipers are very good. I have them on my SCR2.
    More problems but still living....
  • Thanks both. Yes, you're probably right: I haven't changed the cables since I got it last Feb, and I've done 3500 miles in the meantime

I'll try getting it sorted over the hols.

    Cheers again

I'd replace the brake pads and clean the rims first rather than replace the cables. I'd expect to get 5 years plus out of cables on a road bike with mudguards fitted. 3500 miles, however, is an awful lot on a set of brake pads. They're almost certain to be completely worn out, especially if used in gritty, wet conditions.

Fibrax pads perform excellently and are very reasonably priced too, Salmon pads are far too expensive for me.
  • I have replaced the pads - a couple of times - but have never made any special effort on the rims, beyond a wipe down every once in a while, so will do this. Thanks all.
  • You might want to try something like this on the braking surface it helps clean all the cr*p off https://www.sigmasport.co.uk/app/secure/ProductDetails.aspx?FamilyID=1552

  • Hey there,

I also agree that the cables will make a large difference.

I've been considering the Shimano 105 callipers as an inexpensive upgrade. A set should set you back less than £50, without pads.

    Cheers
