Professionalism and the Olympics?

Is there a logic (however flawed) behind the rules that "professionals" can and do compete in some Olympic events but not others? Or is it just some historical accident?

    Isn't this thread about 6 months too late? :P

    What's it matter so long as within each discipline it's consistent?

    At a guess, I'd imagine that it has something to do with the scope for professional earnings. The only sport that I can think of off the top of my head where professionals aren't permitted is boxing (there are probably others). You can make a living out of boxing if you're good, but making a living out of track cycling (without funding and grants) is less likely.

    Disclaimer: I don't know much about this at all.
