Leeds to Sheffield - know any good routes

I (hopefully) will be cycling down to Sheffield from Leeds to see some in-laws over Xmas and wondered if anyone knew any good routes away from the main A-roads?

I know that there is a cycle route on the transpennine trail, but it looks like it wanders off all over the place, and I was looking for something at bit more direct.

Don't think I will be managing to go both ways in one day judging by those hills around Penistone. May have to fit the roof rack to the wife's car for the return journey.

A longer route with some tough but glorious climbing: Holmfirth - Woodhead - Glossop - Snake Pass - Rivelin Valley (or Hathersage - Dore if you need south Sheffield)
