dont over do it, making your feet to tight with socks and that will restrict bloodflow and make them feel cold.

Too many pairs of socks will be bulky and squash your toes inside your shoes restricting circulation and possibly making things worse.
The cheap option is to buy a pair of thin but warm socks like De feet woolie boolies. An even cheaper option is to slip some freezer bags over the top of your socks before you stick your shoes on.This will reduce the wind chill.

The other option is to buy some cheap overshoes.

Not many overshoes are around ,for a tenner but a Decathlon sports store or Aldi might be worth a try.

  • Thanks for replies. will go easy on the socks. i think i might try these http://www.aldi.co.uk/uk/html/offers/58_7176.htm
quite cheap so not much to lose if they arent effective. They package also includes a cap which is good coz after my toes, ears are the next coldest part.

I had exactly the same problem and bought some overshoes last week which work great - most of my cycling was being done at 8 in the morning and vented cycling shoes don't keep the warmth in so I bought these:

There are loads of these sets going on ebay every night I think - I managed to win an auction for 99p so that was £4.49 all in so very happy :D

    Sandwich bags!

I rode for 20mins this morning and my feet when numb. I got to where I work so I could warm my feet up and I put some sandwich bags over my socks. 10mins later I was back out riding with great results! My feet stayed warm through the icy puddles and everything! When I got home I canceled my Wiggle order of some overshoes!

Yeh so long story short, use sandwich bags because they are cheap, effective and disposable.

Write back if you have any luck.

    Andy.

Sorry, just read 'The Spiderman's' post which already suggested that!
  • Tomorow i will try the plastic bags again. I have used them before but i just didnt like the feel. They are not breathable....although i never got cold feet that day while my mate who didnt have any got cold feet.

Just realised the aldi offer was for september
  • Does anyone know how the aldi system works? if i went to the store, would i find those items from september special buys? Would it be possible to get the items elswhere.
I would also be interested in a pair of the cycling trousers

    A pair of over shoes

I have found these keep my feet dry and walm on a 50 min comute and better than neprene. Also they are very reflective so even better in the winter. also used in the summer and not too hot.
as for the trousers I use the Luso max reple you dont relase it is raining on you legs and they are walm as well.

but I would go for the bib tights nexting as even walmer.

    Good job its Christmas :D

Quite like the look of them overshoes, have they got a velcro tab at the top to stop that annoying ankle slapping of others?

Try one pair of thickish wool socks. Hiking socks are good.

Your shoes aren't too tight for you are they? That can make my feet cold.

If you're REALLY lucky you might find some in a bargain bin if you have a large store near you - probably won't though as their stuff is such good value it gets sold out VERY quickly. Though my local store did have loads of pairs of cycling shoes reduced to about £14 at the weekend - sizes 8 - 10 if anyone's near Daventry and wants some cheap shoes for the winter!

Other than that - layers of thin socks and sandwich bags are better than nothing though it feels a bit odd if you have to do any walking!

Just thermal socks mate. 2 pairs of normal socks isn't much warmer than 1, sometimes it's colder because you squeeze out the air pockets. I heart my merino wool thermals... True I wear them under Sealskinz but it's just simply no more cold feet, even standing in a stream I'm warmer than my mate on the bank

  • just come back from a ride. the sandwich bags actually work. i did not realise they were having an effect until my right foot toes pierced the bag and i started getting some cold on my right foot while my left remained warm
