Replacing a Headset

Is this is specialist job for the bike shop?
I usually like to take the DIY approach, but think I'm right in saying you need special tools for this?
Can anyone suggest how much is it likely to cost to replace the headset, incl.:
1) Labour?
2) New Headset - £20-30 (FSA etc) ???
3) Is it acceptable to buy a new part (cheap) online and ask the LBS to fit it?

1) I would have thought 45 mins work £15?
2) depends on which headset is required but many come in around that cost.
3) They'll just charge you more for fitting, plus if you get the wrong one it's your fault. Buy at your LBS and get them to fit it is probably the best & cheapest option. It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.
I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result0 -
If you're asking then you probably aren't ready to do it yourself, as a rule of thumb (although you might be some DIY wizzard!)
LBS it, get them to get a decent headset with sealed cartridge bearings and a good rep, eg FSA or Cane creek
You'll be looking at £10-£20 depending on how much they like you as it is a fairly involved job, remove forks, remove old cups, remove crown race then re-fit and re-assemble.0 -
Remove the old headset first, then take to the LBS.
May not charge as much?http://www.bikeradar.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=12851595

dont forget the crown race on the fork will need replacing."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
