Im about to sign up for a cycle to work scheme........the price limit is £1000
I currently ride a 2002 Enduro Expert, which is indeed great at soaking up those big hits in Wales - but a bit heavy a wallowing on a cross country long distance like the South Downs.
I need somthing like a Speccy Epic?
Problem is I have to choose it from here: http://www.leisurelakesbikes.com/catalo ... ?&cid=3068
as they supply Halfords for the cycle to work scheme so im kind of limited......
Any suggestions?
Cheers

Halfords can get you almost anything these days. Call them on: 08700 660511 - option 2.
I'm looking at getting either the Trek Fuel Ex 5.5 or the Specialized FSRxc Comp (both about a grand) on my C2W scheme.
I've checked with Halfords and they have no problem getting either of those bikes. You only need two tools: WD40 and Duck Tape.
If it doesn't move and should, use the WD40.
If it shouldn't move and does, use the tape.0 -
Have a look at thw What Full Suss thread for some ideas. Won't get an epic with that budget, and most dealers on the scheme will only sell at RRP.0

How about this http://www.surosa.co.uk/detail.aspx?id=5001&utm_source=Froogle&utm_medium=PriceComp&utm_term=Froogle&utm_content=None&utm_campaign=PriceComp1 sorry about the long URL
Apologies if you can't get it on your cycle2work scheme.'Hello to Jason Isaacs'0 -
The old Enduros weren't massively bulky either, you might find that a £1k bike nowadays weighs a very similar amount, my old 2001 Enduro came with an air forks, air shock and weighed just over 30lbs, similar to a modern FSR XC or low end Trance.
If you were at all attached to your current bike I bet a lot could be saved with a light wheelset at very least, the other bonus of a decent set of wheels is you can pass them onto any new bikes you buy in the future.
What shock and fork does your Enduro have fitted just out of interest? I did used to find my stock Float R a bit bouncy. I wonder how much a decent platform shock would help. Going a bit far for a 2002 bike maybe
Failing that, Focus were always good value (assuming you aren't completely bound to that list)

Giant do a Trance X for under £1k, you could get that via Halfords.
Nice light frame to upgrade over time.0 -
Don't the new boardman full suss bikes come out at less than 30lbs? Would it be worth looking at those? I think the £999 one is quite well specced for the price as well.

Great value machines! Doubt be lighter than his Enduro though ;-)
Spesh FSR XC looks great value too.0 -
Anyone got an idea of the weight for the FSR XC Comp?0
-
29.8lbs from my sources.0
-
Is that the old model or the new one? The old models estimates were miles off, it was closer to 32lbs with pedals on. I can't see the new one being much lighter as it's similar kit.
The Specialized section on the MTBR forums are a good place to find that sort of info and lots of people who have given it a go.0 -
From what I read the new one is significantly lighter.0
-
How?
The old frame was fairly light, custom butted M4 aluminium. The worst offenders on the weight are the Toras (which are still there and equally bad), the deore hubbed wheels, cheap chainset, bars etc.
I can't see 2+lbs being knocked off the frame alone, it certainly wasn't a 9lb frame :P
I do like the new one though, quite intruiged to ride one after being fairly disappointed with my old '07 one.
Here's another review of last years for example. Pretty much bang on the weight I measured mine at as well!0 -
I could be wrong (wouldn't be the first time), but apparently a tweaked frame and components has knocked a couple of pounds off. Until I actually weigh it though...
The frame is substantially different though, and much closer to the old Stumpy.0 -
Yeah, I do like the new frame I'm just not sure it'll be much lighter, especially given it has more travel. I'll be intruiged to see what people weigh them at. Component wise almost everything is the same, the new tyres are a similar weight to the old ones as well. With 1lb off the wheels and 2lbs off those forks you'd be at 27lbs which seems crazy for that cheap
To get that in perspective it'd have the same weight and travel as a Stumpjumper FSR Expert with much worse components?0
