Help with STIs

I have bought my boys a small road bike between them - stops them riding their mountain bikes with their elbows "like Bradley Wiggins" - and although the frame is the right size, the reach on the Shimano STIs is too much for their little hands!

The local friendly bike shop has given me some spacers to bring the levers closer to the drops, but I don't know which way round they go!!

Any suggestions before I go back to the bike shop and look really stupid?

Many thanks!

The spacers are inserted between the top of the lever and the lever body - slacken/release the brake cable, pull the lever toward the bars and the spacer fits into the gap. You'll probably need to readjust the brake cable.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

go to the shimano official website - they have "exploded" views of sti showing where the spacers go.
