When the shifting/braking performance gets worse then lube/change them. If lubing makes no real difference then complete cables, inner & outer. Timescale can depend on weather or not you've rode in bad weather or not.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.
  • i would change them after about 1000 miles or when performance feels crap whichever is sooner

you can get cheap cables off ebay, i have used them for years and they are just as good as any other cable i replace mine every 1000 miles and that keeps everything under control.

however i only replace the inners, the outers i relube and keep until they feel too sloppy for my liking
Carbon fibre, it's all nonsense. Drink beer. Ride a steel bike. Don't be a ponce.

I fitted Transfil Mudlovers, about £15 per set, they are fully sealed (have an inner sleeve that goes from lever to mech), they work as new with zero maintenance for years (3 so far). I got them after the standard cables, particularly the loop to the rear mech, kept getting wet and gunged up on my commuter. They will save you money and save from poor shifting. I expect the sleeve will ultimately wear out, but no sign of doing so yet!
