Shamino Tiagra Shifters problem.
Hi.
Well I went and tried to get my bike fixed today, the gear cable snapped, so thought it would be a simple job of just replacing the cable... but the cable wont go in all the way as something is blocking it, I think it is some of the old cable (possible the ball on the end), so I need to unscrew the top of the Tiagra to see if something is in the way.
Secondly I later in the day my front derailleur snapped in half, it was a Tiagra one, so I went to the bike shop and seen a Ultegra one for 2 quid more so got that as he said it would fit, it's abit thinner apparently designed for 10 speed but should it be ok? It physically fits perfectly on the bike.
Thanks
Will.

I don't know how some of you guys do it. In the last 10 years I have ridden over 60000 miles and have only ever broken a chain once. I have never broken a cable, spoke or any component. Am I not trying hard enough. (I don't think I will go out tommorow now without my lucky rabbits foot)
Seriously though you need to look at your maintainence schedules as a failure miles from anywhere could be awkward.0 -
....
I am trying to learn..... not gonna do that sitting here twiddling my thumbs...0 -
If you are still struggling with the cable click the small lever several times to get it back to the slack cable position. You should be able to get the new one in then or remove the old nipple if it is still in there.
The 10sp mech should be OK but you will need to set it up more carefully and use the trim more.
I was not getting at you specifically but am amazed at how many people have so many problems with a simple machine. Park Tools and Sheldon Brown have a vast amount of information and most manufacturers have instruction sheets on their websites.0 -
Use the trim more? I'm not familiar with that.
As silly as it sounds I'm not familiar with all the bike mech stuff yet after about 8 months of riding but I am learning just the gear but I've never done before, people keep telling me to get this book which I'll look at.
It must just be luck, the chain set on my bike had to be replaced 3 weeks ago as that would not go with the SRAM chain, had to have a new chain as it was worn out and the old chain set was worn with the other chain.0 -
Cable fraying and failure is a well known problem with STIs. The Ultegra mech will have a slightly narrower cage so you may have to find that setting up the mech and trimming needs a bit more care.Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0

When you push the levers and you hear them click, with no cable are you supposed to only hear one click on each lever? As thats all there is and the red pointer only moves once too.0

Trim info sheet here. http://tiny.cc/Trim
How to instal cables. See frame in middle of document. (this is for Ultegra but Tiagra is the same.) http://tiny.cc/Techinfo
The small (rear) lever moves one click at a time. Just keep clicking until you have clicked to number of gears that the lever has and you at the right place.
Wait for Tiny to connect to docs.0 -
Yea I know it has one click at a time, but it only clicks once and thats all.0
-
When I went to get my rear mech cable put back on, we got the cable in and it tightened and everything, but when we moved the levers it never moved the cable :?:
It seems the gear changer must be messed up.0 -
You probably did not have the nipple located correctly. You can check this before you run it through the outer by pulling on the cable while operating the lever. You can see a bit more if you pull the brake on and look into the lever barrel. Undo the brake QR to get more room.0
-
I was pulling it, still never worked, seemed quite a way in tbh0

Some pics:
I can get the nipple much further in than that, did not want to for the pic as its a nightmare to get out again, it looks odd when it is in though.
I'm unsure how to tighten the cable here.0 -
The shifter needs operating a few times in the opposite direction. There will be a 'slot' for want of a better word, on the cable channel. Shift down (black lever), until no more movement, then the nipple should slide into the slot.0

See the bit with the groove in it under the nipple. You need to click the small lever until that has gone as far clockwise as it will go looking from the front of the lever. You should see a larger slot in it that holds the nipple, perhaps with the old one still in it. If it will not move you need to 'help' it a bit with a screw driver or something as it may be jammed by the old nipple. A bit of help may be needed here as it is easier with 3 hands.
In the last shot. screw the black knob clockwisw until it stops then back it off 1 turn. Fit the cable and secure with minimum slack. Use the black knob to fine tune the indexing. If the gear will not go to a larger cog turn anti clockwise. Check Park Tools for full instructions.

So I am kinda confused, its making me think the shifters are broke, I can only click the black lever once and the silver once, thats all it will do, one click each way, I thought their would be like 9 clicks or something
Ive put the cable in, pushed black until it wont click after once, pulled cable through, it wont go in all way but I cant see any other stuff in it, I'll have to take it to bike shop I'm sure the shifter is broke, when you push the levers it does not even move the cable.0 -
In your picture the nipple is not anywhere near where it should be. It should be out of site under the alloy housing unless you are in top gear position when it is just visible in the gap. Each click should release the grooved wheel by one gear. Click once then release then click again. The grooved wheel should turn unless something (old nipple?0 is jamming it. The main (front) lever will not go any further because the lever is now in bottom gear position (big cog). Take the new cable out and while pressing a screwdriver against the grooved wheel in a clockwise direction click the black lever. This should ease it round. If not you may have to resort to LBS. York Cycle Works are very good, or they were a few years ago.0

I am in Manchester at the moment. 12 quid at edinburgh cycles, I cant afford it atm I need new brake blocks.
I'm baffled by the rear mech how to tighten the cable, there is nothing to screw it on.
Doing my head in this is.
Cant believe it, lost the thing that tightens the cable...0 -
John.T wrote:I think you need to get someone to have a look at it for you. Do you know any club cyclists in the area. You seem to have got yourself into a state with it and are only making things worse.
I've had a look, and it stumped me.
I've thread new cables into shifters more times I could remember - So I've got no idea what went wrong here.0 -
Its gonna have to be sent off to somewhere called Madison or something.
Apparently the nipple of the old cable is jammed in and basically it wont allow the cog in it or something to rotate so where you would normally put the nipple is hidden away somewhere in there.
I rang cycle Heaven in York up where I bought the bike from and they said it would be too complex to take apart but they can do it in a couple of hours apparently if I take it in but it means no propor cycling until next year as I'll have to wait until Christmas to get it fixed.0 -

If someone told you to use your carrera would you lol? for a long 40+ mile ride?0 -

Red. Have you actually seen the shifter. It is possible to get the old nipple out but not easy. Quite right about using the Carrera. No point in knackering the good one at this time of year. My good bikes won't see the outside of my garage for some months now.
Will. Suggest a look on Ebay for a R/H 9sp shifter may be your fastest way out. (It is 9sp isn't it. Not that it affects the problem).0 -
My genesis is a bike for all year round, my carrera is commuting only, its far too small for me.
I'll try ebay.

found that, thing is I could get it fixed/replaced probably for free at a bike shop I bought it from since its under warranty.0 -
Give them a try but they may say it is wear and tear and not covered. As I said earlier you have got through a lot of kit in 8 months. It's a pity you are not in York. I could have had a look for you. I live in Harrogate. I think you need a bit of controlled brutality on the lever. If you can not get the nipple out the lever is knackered anyway so time to get a bit rough.0

I'll be leaving it until I am back in York for 2 weeks at Christmas, I'll be getting it fixed at Cycle Heaven and I don't think they will say it is wear and tear they seem pretty good.0
