my stumpy is currently fitted with a 105mm stem with either 8 or 20 degree rise. it feels too long and i want something shorter, pobably about 70mm.
im considering the thomson x4 for gucciness but is there something else i should consider.
budget is anything really, but im looking at about 60 quid. oh and i am one of the shallow folk who put stock into the looks of a mtb component.

I find my Sunline integrated stem (888) to be far better quality than any of the Thomson stems I've had in the past. Real nice feel to it.0

What sort of strength? XC light, AM, or DH tough?0
-
hmmmm,
tis to go on the stumpy so xc style really. im a big old unit though dont forget so needs to be good and strong. i actually reallylike the spesh stem but i dont know if i could get a short one from somewhere.0 -
I'd probably look for around a 150g XC unit. CRC has loads to choose from, I like the Kore ones on a budget (used to have one) and the Control Tech for a bit more (WMB highly rates them).
I think stems are quite simple things, can't go wrong as long as get one for intended use!0 -
i was looking at control tech ones on crc as it happens. i was well expecting you to recommend a smica one!!
think im gonna get the thomson but am just wondering if there is some wonder kit out there i havent thought of.0 -
I would have if they did them less than 90mm lol. Or the Kooka one.0

hey guys i looking and buy my first dualy and want to get some advice as to wether stretch my budget and get a giant trance x2 with the full slx of get the x3 and then upgrade the derailers and shifters to slx the diffrence in prive is around 800 $ i do a fair bit of riding at the moment on a hard talk avanti atomic which is on the cheap side but has served me well. i taken it to all the local mtb parks including listerfield and you yangs and have clocked up around 1000km in the past 6 months. :?:
any suggestions?0 -
have a look at the kore ones.0

Race Face Evolve AM or Atlas AM, but DON'T get a chrome/polished finish as it peels!
I have an Evolve AM 90mm on the Giant but thinking I might swap it for 70mm. I think that the Evolve is about £35 and the Atlas is £60.0 -

Is it just me that fails to get turned on by expensive stems? In my experience they are no better than a 20 quid one, of which they aer plenty!0

My DMR Conrod cost me £6, but people assume it was really expensive because it's so burly and heavily welded, and because you never see them on sale 8)Uncompromising extremist0 -
Same with my Kooka! Whan you say its 116g, and they see the CNCd plate they say wow, 70 quid? Nope, 20, and its just fine. Any as you know, can go cheaper than that, the Zoom ones are great! And not just XC stems, DH too.0

Bought one of these for my long-forked hardtail http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=19263 seems well finished enough and I didn't want to join the Thomson crowd0

I went for the Thomson Elite X4, primarily because it was well rated in the mags.
Seems a bit heavy now though, even with the ti bolt kit it weighs 150g (90mm 10°).*Rock Lobster Team Tig SL (22lb 14oz)

I've got the 90mm of this. Can't go wrong for less than a tenner...and I actually think it looks OK too.0 -
You started the thread correctly... if you'd considered a Thomson X4 just get it, there's nothing significantly better for the money, its light, stiff as hell and made beautifully ...you wont be wishing youd bought something else.0
-
There is nothing significantly worse either - even for a third the price.0

sonic is right, it is hard to get too enthused about stems, seat posts are even less exciting!!
that said, there is something very satisfying about gucci kit. i am prepared to admit it is a waste of money but atleast i am honest about the facts and dont try to come up with a pretend technical reason why this is better than that.
i bought a thomson stem in the end and its actually a very nice thing, beautifully machined and strong as hell. thing is though, for less money i could have bought summat plenty stiff and a fair chunk lighter!!
this thread was meant to hilight any other top choices available as ive not bought a stem in a long time (not since the reign!!)0
