Truvativ crank arm snapped clean off!

I was out riding on my 2008 Demo 7 this morning and my right hand crank arm basically fell off! It appears that the axle has snapped between the crank arm (Truvativ Hussefelt) and the BB (Truvativ Howitzer). First question is how is this possible? Surely this is hardened steel and secondly how do I fix it? Having never needed one before could someone tell me, is the axle part of the BB or the crank and therefore which one do I need to buy in order repair it? I also seem to have lost whatever bolt was in the right hand arm/chainring keeping it all together. Heres a pic of the damage...

axle is part of the crank
id take it back to where you got it!0 -
I thought this sort of Howitzer fitting was a variation if ISIS? IE axle not attatched to the cranks?
Looks like the bolt holding the crank on has sheared.0 -
ahh appologies, axle is in the BB
might be able to get some mole grips on the snapped part there. Or if not id drill into ut and use an easy out.0 -
Does this mean I can get a replacement axle or is a new BB required?0

from the picture it looks like all you need is a new bolt to secure the crank back onto the BB - once youve removed the snapped bit obviously.0

The crank arm is splined, which slides onto the opposite splined axle, then is fixed with a bolt. It looks like the bolt shaft is still in the axle! The splines look intact, but most probably are damaged on the crank as are softer aluminium. Examine.
As Jon says, try and get the bolt out and fit a new one with the old crank. If damaged it will work loose.
If need to replace axle I think you need to replace the whole unit inc bearings.0 -
thanks all - I'll have a good look, see if there's any damage and try and get the bolt out.0

Assuming I can get the snapped crank bolt out and there is no damage to the splines on the crank arm - does anyone know where I can get a new crank bolt for a Truvativ Howitzer Team BB?0

CRC most probably, or just ring round the LBSs.0

I've managed to get the offending bolt out with mole grips and there doesn't appear to be any damage to the splines on he crank arm - time will tell. Anyway - I've picked up a new M12 crank bolt from fleabay which will hopefully sort the job - Thanks All.0
