To be honest I am not sure how much help you are going to get with this. The question is too open. It is like someone saying "I don't like red cars...which blue one is best?"
What you need to do is get out on the bike and see how easy/hard the local terrain is and then come back and ask a question based on your findings.17 Stone down to 12.5 now raring to get back on the bike!0 -
If it's fairly flat terrain, you may well be able to ride a slightly bigger gear, but it really needs to be the sort of thing you try out and see how you get on rather than being "one size fits all". It's pretty easy to swap the rear sprocket for a different one.
For what it's worth, I also use 42x17 on mine, but I have no idea whether Bedfordshire is similar terrain to Southern California (although I'm guessing you have better weather ). I've tried 42x16 but found it was just a little too big to be comfortable on for me on some of the climbs.0
