Does anyone know if there are online fitting instructions for these supposedly easy to fit mudguards, preferably with pictures. I've worked out most of the details, I think, but it would be nice to get some confirmation.

Good for you - everytime I look at the single piece of cardboard with a few hard to see photos and basic instructions I just think I can't be 4rsed. I do love the bit that says check the contents to make sure you have everything yet it doesn't give you a list of what is supposed to be included - doh. It gives you two bags of fittings however nowhere does it tell you which go where. Clearly they expect that anyone fitting these just knows all these things. Great advert for the LBS workshop.

I bet if you were from Buckley you'd be able to fit SKS Chromoplastics

    I know I can

Once you accept that it doesn't really matter if you fit the guards the 'right' way you'll be much happier. Just do what works and seems safe - you don't want a poorly fitted guard fouling your front wheel and throwing you off.

I tried fitting my Chromoplastics according to the instructions but the supplied plastic thingies (the ones that slide over the mudguard mounting brackets and which the stays go into) just didn't seem to work, so I left them off. I think SKS were having an off day when they designed those little buggers as they simply didn't want to go on and would have forced me to trim the stays which I couldn't do at the time due to lack of tools.

The important thing is to use the quick release stays on the front.

Its really not that difficult, but you'll probably need either a hacksaw or a good set of bolt cutters to trim the ends off the stays.

    +1

    The instructions are crap.

I cut the ends off the black thingies and just used the top bit as a cap. Doing it that way may mean you don't need to worry about trimming the stays.

And the patience of a saint. If you commute, though, it's going to be time well spent!
  • Very poor instructions, luckily I had tools and a vice at hand to cut the stays but what a lot of friging about, they should definitley worn you that more than a spanner is required to fit, I thought about cutting the the black bits too but perservered!!

What are these black plastic bits people are referring to? The only thing I can think of is the quick release attachment for the front mudguard, which is IMPORTANT. Don't fit it and you risk a nasty accident if e.g. a stone should lodge itself between the guard and your wheel. Your wheel could lock up = pain.

  • I can't believe that you guys have problems fitting a set of mudguards. Who needs instruction.
I have only two things to say to that; Bo***cks

They're talking about the caps for the tops of the stays.

Looks like I'm breaking out the bolt croppers then. Thanks for all your help, especially the lovely chap from Buckley!

Why would they need cut? They just fit over the end of the stay don't they?

No, the new ones have an end cap that fits over the bracket attached to the guard, so the stay can only protrude about 1cm for this to fit. It was more fiddly but I did it okay.
  • All this fuss about quick release stays. The stays aren't the problem - when the 'stone' or whatever wedges between the tyre and the mudguard / fork crown bit, the quick release stays look somewhat pointless.

Just make sure there is enough clearance as per the instructions :D

They aren't pointless, my tyre picked up a stick, the QR stays popped out, my wheel didn't lock, I didn't go over the bars - a very valuable job done!
