Basicaly, should I replace my helmet every so often?

I have a nice met jobby that's lasted me 3 years, I'm sure I should replace them every x long (where x is an integer).

For me it used to be when said helmet looked sufficiently dorky enough compared to new ones to justify the cost of a new one. Now in the past that's been every couple of years but I fear that with the latest batch that I can't see them getting much better looking.

Although these days I seem to split one open at least once a year so the choice is out of my hands... :-/

There is no set answer. Manufacturers give varying lifetimes, and of course should always be replaced when damaged. UV can (or was known to ) degrade the shells.
  • Some helmet manufacturers have a crash replacement agreement where if you get a dent and / or some scrapes on the helmet you can get your next one at a discounted price, as long as it's one of theirs of course.

Take any after market stickers off before taking it to the LBS though. Apparently putting stickers on your helmet will make it weaker and void any warranty sort of thing.
