Hi my first post:

I am going to Fort William for christmas and would like to know if is worth taking my MTB. I have been there a few times now and know a few off road routes around where we are staying, but its only ever been in the summer. So what do you think leave it at home or take it with me?

Cheers

Being a native im ashamed to say I know little of the Fort William cycling but if its good enough for the World Champs then I say, if its not too much of an effort to take it,...then do so.

there is loads of riding around the fort! take your bike!

Obviously the DH track is shut now, but theres still plenty or XC routes that work really well.

if you mean the gondola, then they will not allow bikes on it. technically you could push to the top of the DH track....but the World Champs XC lop starts in the car park and only has one part of the climb which is steep and loose. the rest is a fairly easy red.

so to give an idea of a nice ride.......

use the World champs XC as a warm up...its only short at 8.5km or so...couple of laps??

then have a snack to eat then ride 10 Under the Ben (around 16km)....

    then after lunch.....

Awesome, my family camped there when I was little, shortly before we decided to move up there!

  • Camping, are you serious. I dont think my 77 year old mum would last the first night.
We are in one of the lodges. Normally leave the camping for the spring/summer/autum time.
I was there earlier this year camping at the same site. No MTB though, I was on my other passion - motorbikes. So far we have camped, static caravans and cottages, first time in one of the lodges, bloody expensive though.
We would also love to move there, it will happen but not sure when though.

  • i went camping in fort william last october, purely to ride the trails, do not let the weather hold you back, we pushed up the DH to the beggining of the forrest, you'd have to be pretty comited to push up further than that it is hard going, but the 4X and witches trails are still do-able and a lot of fun so if i was you i would definately take your bike. enjoy

and the easy way to get to the start of the forrest is to push almost to the top of the 4X track and take the break in the tree to the left, before getting up beyond the first lefthanded hipper (if you were going down if you know what I mean.)
