Hmm, no entry for toe-clips with double straps (not that I use them, mind you).

I like toe-clips because they are cheap and you don't need special shoes. All those years of practice getting into them would be wasted if I changed now.

It's also easy to slide out backwards- handy for rear-dismounts :-)

    Cheers,

  • I'm in the SPD camp as I'm cheap :-) The only reason I ended up being "allowed" to spend money that should have gone on feeding/clothing the children was that I managed to catch the wife when she was in a good mood and had already got some shoes that took cleats from lidls! (stop laughing £15 is a bargain!) not the best of shoes but they have a reasonably stiff sole (even noticed a difference in the toe-clip phase before I got the SPD pedals) so do the job for the cycle commute!

Also another important thing as they are reasonably good to walk in they are ideal for the drinks we often partake in! I was rather nervous on Friday letting James carry a tray of drinks up the stairs at Morpeth with his cleats on

Also since going clipless I've found my trackstanding has come on really well as I try to avoid un-clipping when stopped or when balancing in slow/stationary traffic!

Flats - I had SPDs for two years and hated them.

I have a bunion on one of my feet. I therefore use some mini plastic toe clips from Halfords and some Berghaus hiking shoes with fairly rigid soles. I have not found a cycling shoe with sufficient upper softness to allow me to feel they might be comfortable.

    Anyone have any suggestions?

I was wearing SPD's - would never risk drink carrying on road cleats - exactly the reason I got SPD's for commuting.

Sorry! I'm sure I didn't have that much to drink that it affected my memory

  • This poll is flawed. I bet 80% of those that have responded have only ever tried 1 pedal system and I bet that's a Shimano one.

That puts me in the 20% :D:D:D

Got some zeros which I haven't used. They're quite small, so I wonder about how comfortable your foot would be on a long ride. OTOH, the cleat is large and (IIRC) mostly metal, so maybe that spreads the load, and CSC use them, so they can't be that bad.

Have em, love em. They're not similar to SPD-L's really - far superior:

Fixed or Free Float - not spring loaded, kind on the knees
    Low stack height
    Double sided Entry
    Light
    Larger platform
Sealed cartridge bearings - user serviceable
  • Only voted once, but use SPDs on crosser and MTB. Simano shoes.

Number of mates have egg beaters, but in the time they have gone through three sets, I am still using the same ones, so what does that tell you?

  • I bought silver Ultegra SPD-SLs when I had a Giant with a Shimano drivetrain and silver chainset. Now I have a Look bike with a black FSA chainset & SRAM groupset I would really like to change them for black Look Keos (for tart reasons obv) but I can't justify the expense as the SLs are very good and they really don't look that bad ;)

  • Use SPD's for commute, but Time RXS Carbon otherwise which are superb. Prefer metal cleats to plastic
    Time VRS Pro-Team 08 – weekend steed
    Condor Moda - commute
Scott something or other - manky old MTB

They sound good. My only reservation is if they are alot harder to walk in than spd-l... Although I read you can get cleat covers to reduce wear. Guess Ill just try some out.

Pedals not for commuting so much but for a weekend rider... I have SPDs on the Fixie, and figue that something more fancy might be better for the flash new bike I'm plotting.

Feel free to have a massive row about the reasons why. :)

You could always get a nice SPD pedals like Eggbeaters or Rithey WCS Ti SPD's....

    Ok, logic please prevail.

Would you put Hub-caps on a TVR, a Bentley, a Noble or a Porsche.

No, to do such at the very least is an act of war or should justify being locked away under the mental health act.

Would you buy a Bentley then have it modified into an estate? Would you put Panniers on a Carbon Fibre bike?

Then why on this or any planet in the solar system would anyone consider putting anything less than a race orientated pedal - whose design was based on the concept WHOOSH! AND SCALP! - On a bike that costs nearly as much as a new small car? We are potentially talking about a Viner, the bike demands a pedal created by people far more attractive and smarter than average humans and blessed by God.

L-i-T most of the pedals all offer around the same kind of performance, comfort with slight product differentation. Indulge the ego, by a lightweight, funky looking pedal made from individual molecules molded together. If you don't like them learn to like them unless they endanger your life.

I've found, like everything bike related, at each price point there are so many options its mostly down to preference and personl taste

Disclaimer: Please forgive my outburst, I haven't ridden my bike for two days now and have a build up of excess energy....

LiTs: I've found it. The perfect pedal for you. The one that says "Hey, look at me! I'm a girl, but even so I know my bike kit and I'm gonna scorch your ass like a toasted marshmellow, then spit you out like I've been chewing tobacco for a year."

But this is the thing, would you honestly put those (in a dark shade of orange) on your Cervelo? Would it be anything less than something that looked crazy.

Don't ask me why, they look cool.

Time ATACS for me on the fixie and the MTB. So easy to clip into and last forever.

Looks on my road bike - but the plates wear out. Times never do.

i ride looks, but i regret it because i read this article:

    http://www.bikesportmichigan.com/featur ... dals.shtml

Now all i want is a pair of TIME RXSsssss

    For the record:
    Roadie - Look
    SS - Look
but when my SS turns into a fixie i shall be going back to SPDs on it just for the double sided clip in until i get comfortable riding it and can go back to my looks

Yeah, but what you have to remember about Tom Demerly (the owner of that store, and author of the article) is that he's a frustrated journalist/writer/photojournalist who's stuck selling bike kit. I've read his review of a Cervelo R2.5, and I've had one myself. Whilst I recognise some of the bike in his review, I recognise a lot more of his desire to be a writer.

so what you are trying to say is that the article is bollocks?

Not necessarily; just that the signal to noise ratio might be a bit low. I've not used those pedals, so for all I know they may well be the DBs.
