It is so freezing outside and all the roads covered in frost, so must be slippy. I have never been out cycling in such conditions. What a chance to fall off ? :? i am not scared if i cycle off road, but otherwise seems to me quiet dangerous...

Snow is OK but it hides a lot of hazards. Ice is slippery  but remember you can't skid while you're upright, travelling in a straight line and not braking. Off-road it rarely forms in sheets like it does on the road so there's a chance to ride through it.

Let some air out of the tyres, relax and go with it.

I've been out today and in fact it was all right! Didn't fell off :)
Some places were flooded like 3 inches deep with chunks of ice floating , so i felt like a Titanic crossing the Arctic Ocean. Was cool though 8)

I know it's balmy here in the South compared to 'up there' but I went out on Saturday when it was around +2C (without taking account of the wind chill) and I overdid the clothing by a long way. I would rather be a bit chilly than have to come home sweating like a horse after 20 minutes

Anyone else have this problem, deciding how much to put on?

  • No, years of experience coaching means I've got a pretty good eye, plus i always have a bag to put any excess in if the weather changes.

That said, I can't corner on ice for love nor money, came off the other day cycling home with some shopping, it was the only ice i saw all day!
  • not as cold where i am no ice or snow so i can still go ridin just a little bit chilly... :?
  • I was really looking forward to riding in the snow this morning, but we got none, I was very disappointed and therefore went straight back to bed. Oops....

Ben there, done that. Add "going dark" and "middle of nowhere" into the equation and it suddenly becomes a lot less appealling...

On top of Snowdon a few years back with some 'enthusiastic' mates when a proper white-out descended. We could barely stand up let alone see, but guess who'd packed some ski goggles eh eh ?

We descended for 40 minutes in a world of white, just following the map and compass. Suddenly the blizzard cleared away and...we were exactly where we were supposed to be. The other guys were happy, but I was made up.

I remember that day very well! was a sunday i seem to rememeber. The odd thing was that i was up on the south downs the day before in shorts and t shirt basking in the sunshine. Bizzare!

Think Maplin do them - they definitely do battery powered hats and gloves.

I was at Brands Hatch for the British Superbikes. Saturday was great; clear skies and quite warm but Sunday looked like this.

Just remember, whilst on the road, do not lock your front wheel, you'll almost definitely fall off.

    Hat
    Waistcoat/gillet
    Gloves
    No electric socks!! Just Insoles.

Just don't forget a good supply of batteries!
And, to stay away from water.
Stumpy, Rockhopper (stolen!) & custom SX Trail II - that should do it!
