Seeing as the best British cyclist , Mark Cavendish is not there, I would vote tactically. My real choice would be Nicole Cooke, but I would vote for Chris Hoy as I think he is better known to the public!
  • should be cooke - I have said this before but if she were a male athlete she'd be talked about in the same breath as steve regrave, daly thompson, nick faldo, bobby moore etc etc, but she wont win - did cav get in young SPOTY category ?
  • Chris Hoy, three Olympic titles and one world championship title speaks for itself really.

Hoy it is then as I guess he's better known, but I agree that Nicole probably has had the more impressive year. World and Olympic RR champion is some achievement.

See, the vote is split between cyclists, guaranteeing Hamilton a free run
  • Cooke's is the most impressive and dramatic achievement, but as someone else said Hoy will garner more popular votes so tactically it has to be Hoy.
  • I would vote for Cooke.

My personal view is that I can name more of the people she has beaten than any of the others. Riders like Arndt and Voss are truely awsome in their own right. So to me an achievement is measured by the quality of the opposition

I know Hoy beat a Brit in one of the Olympic finals, but I don't know who the others were. I guess that's down to my own ignorance, and lack of knowledge of track racing.
  • deliberate attempt by the bbc to split the cyclist vote ensuring they dont win i call shenanigans , conspirecy etc etc (just thought i'd be the first) cant vote cos i'm in ireland

heart says cooke, head says hoy esp if it beats lewis in that race thingy

  • Don't know if I approve of tactical voting . Still , it hardly matters . I wish it weren't so but It is still my contention that it's fixed weeks beforehand by the suit that runs the show for the BBC , our costly 'phone in votes merely pay for the whole shebang . Likely it'll be the ghastly Christine Ohuorugu as , if its not footy , the BBC bias is towards athletics .
But in my fantasy world it would be Nicole by a mile . She's the one who did it all on the road , where it matters . I'm proud of the track mob too but the track's never cut it for me .
Cav should'nt have been sidetracked by the Olympics this year , but short of winning the TDF outright , he wouldn 't have been a contender .

I'm going to vote for Cooke - I think she deserves it - if a man won the world and olympic mens RR title in the same year there'd be no question about it - womens RRing is probably less competitive but she can only beat who is in front of her (well if they are in front she hasn't beaten them - but you know what I mean).

it's a hard life if you don't weaken.

    Lewis Hamilton 4/6 Bet
    Rebecca Adlington 11/4 Bet
    Chris Hoy 4/1 Bet
    Joe Calzaghe 50/1 Bet
    Andrew Murray 80/1 Bet
    Christine Ohuruogu 100/1 Bet
    Ben Ainslie 100/1 Bet
    Bradley Wiggins 150/1 Bet
    Rebecca Romero 150/1 Bet
    Nicole Cooke 150/1 Bet

Read it and weep, doesn't look like our lot has a chance, even Chris Hoy.

Why is Andy Murray 5th favourite ?

Hamilton's achievement is fantastic, but I think he can win SPOTY when he wins next time. Chris Hoy has the highest profile amongst the cyclists, but Nicole Cooke has probably achieved the most. Like others I am afraid the cyclists vote will be split to their detriment. I would be happy for any of the cyclists to win, and also Rebecca Addlington, but she has to be an outsider. Ben Ainslie did brilliantly, but (as a sailor I can say this :) ), cycling is the tougher sport. The track team are surely the team of the year though, gotta be a dead cert, certainly isn't going to be England Rugby!

As the odds show - Nicole Cooke can't win this, but Chris Hoy can. A vote for Cooke is effectively a vote for Hamilton. If you want a cyclist to win then you have to vote for Hoy.

You can vote for Nicole for Welsh SPOTY - which she has a chance in (although I expect Shane Williams to win that one). Call 09015 222 802.

Hoy's odds are way too long and looks a really good value bet. All over the internet I've seen people say "Hamilton will win, but I'm voting for Hoy".

Im sorry but Im voting for Nicole Cooke because I believe she deserves it more than the rest.Im not changing my mind for tactical reasons or whatever else.
If Hamilton wins so be it,I doubt Nicole will be bothered too much, she cant even get on a cover of a cycling magazine.

  • what happens if we actually vote for 'personality' rather than achievement? I mean Hamilton has got the personality of a bit of cardboard.
  • The user and all related content has been deleted.
  • Tactical voting or not it ain't going to do any good - even if Tom Simpson rose from the dead, won the TdF, three olympic golds and the Pride of Britain awards he'd still come second to Lewis Hamilton, even though the latter has no discernable personality of which I'm aware. Besides, the cyclists did the business where it mattered - Beijing - and when the world was watching, so is anyone really that bothered about SPOTY?
  • I just can't comprehend how 4 TDF stages don't even warrant the shortlist...

It's a great achievement but ask your average punter if he's heard of Bradley Wiggins, Chris Hoy or Mark Cavendish and I'd bet he'd say yes to Hoy, probably same for Wiggins but he would not know who Cavendish is. Almost all Cavendish's 17 wins this year have been off of the British media's radar.
  • Another vote for Nicole here.As Cav.isnt in it.
Why hasn't Nicole been on the front cover of the british mags :x
  • Hi there.

No point moaning about any of it - lets just vote for whoever we want to finish in 2nd place!

Ten years ago could any of you imagine having 4 cyclists on the shortlist while a multiple TdF stage winner and a host of Gold medal winners didn't even make it?

How about we just celebrate British Cycling success and huge public profile!

    Cheers, Andy

    Cooke definitely.

I view Hoy's achievements like I do those crazy people on Record Breakers used to do like balancing the most spoons on your chin or taking the record for most handstands in an hour. Kind of impressive, but in an odd and meaningless field to me.

Nicole on the other hand, took the two most prestigious events on two wheels (for females) and did so with grace and no small helping of style. She also comes across as an absolute diamond.

Not only is she reigning Olympic and World Champion, she's also British Champion too, all three in one year.

If I could be bothered I would vote for Nicole but it's all a farce anyway so probably won't bother to watch. I have enough trouble voting on STRICTLY :D - it's a bit like my ProTour picks - they go out :(
