Had a new cassette fitted at the LBS on Saturday. Out twice over the weekend everything appears fine but on Sunday I noticed a strange clicking as I freewheeled into my road coming home. I think it is coming from the rear hub however I notice that when I spin the wheel the cranks turn very slightly a bit like it was a fixed wheel. They only move a bit but I am sure I have not noticed it before. Does anyone think that the cassette installation could be the problem? Or has my hub developed a problem?

sounds like a sticky freehub to me.

  • It is a Shimano Ultegra hub. What would be the solution for a sticky freehub please ?

    well you can:

    - replace it, or

    - blast WD40 through it then soak it in oil, to loosen it up

unfortunately with Shimano freehubs you can't rebuild them so it's somewhat of a bodge to service them. In the past I've taken it off (10mm allen key) then put it in a jar with white spirits/paraffin and shook it like crazy to clear out as much crud as possible. Then soak it in oil to lubricate as much as possible. It works to some extent, and can extend the life of an old freehub.

If it's only a tad sticky and not actually crudded up then soaking in oil may well be enough.
