Aerolite Pedals - anyone use / used them?
As subject heading really - are they any good?
Not really fussed about the weight thing, just curious what they're like to use as I'm weighing up pedal options at the moment.

I used these *&%#$@% things for PBP in 1987 and would not hesitate to condemn them utterly! Yes, they are very light and have lots of clearance...
BUT:
1. Nonstandard attachment of cleats to shoes (needs drilling); no adjustment possible without redrilling.
2. *ANY* walking or pressure on outside of cleat (ie from putting foot down when stopped) damages it. It then becomes more difficult to enter the pedal, plus the cleat tends to slide sideways off the pedal requiring unclipping and repositioning every few minutes. (Very annoying on a 1200+ km ride.)
3. Cleat is very slippery, tall and difficult to walk on in any case.
4. No float - at least until some of the very thin and fragile mounting screws break - (fortunately?) this doesn't take long...
5. Difficult to engage cleat even before it is damaged.
6. Dangerous and almost impossible to ride the bike with any other shoes - may be a good thing for ensuring bike thieves are injured!
Most of the people who liked these pedals were triathletes who left their shoes permanently attached to their bikes; for this they made sense as they were very light.
If you really want light pedals there are better options i.e, almost anything else; I like Speedplay myself...
Surely Aerolights have remained extinct?!? IMO only of value to collectors these days.0 -
Hmmm, 20yrs+ since you've used them then... The cleats can now be fitted to 'normal' cleat holes by the way!
Anyone else got any more recent experience?!
Oh, and as mentioned above I'm not fussed about the weight thing - these are the only pedals that I've not heard much about so wanted to know more. I'm well aware of the alternatives and have used most of them previously, thanks anyway.0 -

Use the search at the top of the forum page, there are 8 pages of threads that mention aerolite. The user Pez Tech runs the Pez cycling news site and has tested just about everything, I'd value his opinion over most others.0
