OK bit of a confession ...I have just bought some new forks (not yet delivered but will be soon) ... then I realized that I have no idea what I need to fit them...help.

Will they come with a star bolt?...Do I need to buy a new headset?..Any ideas folks.

All the very best

Probably wont come with the star washer, usually part of the headset, can be bought seperately. Headset should be OK assuming the fork steerer is the same diameter as the old one (and the headset isn't knackered).

You need to get the crown race off your old forks, there is a special tool for this or you can use a screwdriver and a lot of gentle tapping. You'll need to put the star washer in straight (special tool or can be done manually with care, make sure it goes in straight) and you'll need to cut the steerer to length (again a special saw guide or wing it, there's a recent thread in here on cutting steerer tubes down).

you will need change crown race over, yes you will need a new star nut or other device.

you will also need to cut the steerer to length.

All the how toos are on Parktools under headsets.

  • I did this two weeks ago. I did not have any specialist tools, so managed to cut the steerer straight by eye with a hacksaw, hit the crown race off with a piece of wood and it was surprisingly easy to fit the star nut in straight with help from the same pieve of wood and a hammer.

    Aye

can all be done manually but you do run the risk of damaging a new set of forks if it goes wrong.
