I have recently taken up mountain biking after a bad accident on my road bike (I was hit by a car). I am picking up my new bike next week and I can't wait to get out there!

Unfortunately my lower leg and ankle are now quite vulnerable. Can any one suggest some good lower leg and ankle guards that I can wear to give myself a bit of extra protection?

So far I have looked at 661 Race leg protectors and 661 ankle biter ankle protectors. I am planning on doing a bit of everything (XC, mucking around, easy downhill etc.).

Thanks in advance!

  • 661 stuff is good i have kyle knee and elbow pads but RaceFace Rally FR Leg Combi`s are suppose to be a highly rated knee/shin protector. check out crc £40 and a load of reviews on them.

  • welcome to the wonderful world of mountain biking....but bad accidents also happen here
  • @mtbikerboy True enough, but inadvertant dismounts are normally your own fault, wheras there are too many mobile chunks of metal driven by mr magoo and friends on the road just waiting to clean you up.

And lets face it there is no form of road riding that remotely compares to topping a fell on a crisp morning with fabulous views all round and a mile and a half of single track descent before you.

  • Thanks for the welcome and the replies everyone. Hopefully I will be able to stay within my limits early on and not have too many offs!

maximus69 I will definitely check out the RaceFace stuff.

+1 for that, I have both the knee-and-shin and elbow-and-forearm combos, both excellent and they get consistent high test results. Check out Chainreaction, they usually sell the Rally FR pads at quite a discount.

The knee-and-shin guards are comfortable enough to wear all day, and unlike a lot of others, they actually rest on top of your foot. That means a) they can't slide down, and b) they actually cover the whole of your shin from kneecap to ankle.
