Compatablity?

I've been slowly upgrading my bike and the gearing and associated systems is next up.
Trying to work out what is compatible with what is proving problematic.
Rather than bore people with specifics, Is there anywhere with a decent table or database that I can use to determine this?
The manufacturers websites, seem to be sufficiently obtuse to prevent the buyer who can't get at the parts in person mixing and matching.

most is compatible. but what do you want to mix?
keep the speeds the same and sram rear mechs work with sram numbered shifters only"Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

XT cassette, LX Mechs, Deore "pod" Shifters and a Truativ ISO Flow 3.0 crank (I cant afford a new crankset yet, nor do I see the shifters making a huge difference.)0
