After recently accidentaly purchasing a i have ended up thoroughly baffled by Sheldon Brown. I haven't really done much maintenance on bikes (can about manage to change an innertube  ) and need to know what i will need, i want to run 7 gears so's to keep my winter bike capable of the hilly ride to work, my question is what do i need? Cheers all

You need a 7 speed freewheel.
Here is a link http://www.spacycles.co.uk/products.php?plid=m2b0s112p0
This is a good shop, I have used the Zenith 7 and 8 speed freewheels which work with shimano indexing.
You will need a freewheel remover, a shimano or campag cassette tool fits, again,Spa cycles should be able to help.
Very Important to grease the threaded part of the hub BEFORE you fit the freewheel, or you will never be able to remove it. Also be careful you don't cross thread the freewheel when you screw it on.

Be careful about the tool you use to remove the old freewheel. It will probably be super tight and some cassette tools have very shallow teeth meaning they only slot onto the freewheel a little way.
I've destroyed a park tool campag cassette tool and damaged the frewheel I was trying to remove by using one of them.
I'd advise you to go for a specific frewheel remover tool, something with nice deep teeth like this one...

Already bought this one as i was to impatient to wait for advice lol, many thanks anyway, don't think removing the old one will be a problem as it's a new wheelset,
i've seen freewheels on ebay for about 8 quid delivered(on very tight budget)

worth bothering with? I assume i'll need a new crank as well as my current crank/chain and cassette are old and must be very worn so will probably slip, will my current brakes/shifters be ok with the freewheel set up, thanks again allwinter beast: http://i497.photobucket.com/albums/rr34 ... uff016.jpg

If you want to do it properly, replace freewheel, chain, worn chainrings and maybe jockey wheels.
What shifters do you have? speed?0 -
Old Shimano rx100 7 speed shifter on left 2 speed on right, never had problems with them, and not hugely keen on replacing them as i am skintwinter beast: http://i497.photobucket.com/albums/rr34 ... uff016.jpg
