my mates got a gt avalanche and it is a very good bike for the money it is really a xc bike but he pushes it to big drop offs and more advanced dh trails0

I'd go with the GT, more sensible looking geometry, and IMHO better forks.
Oh any money you save under the budget would be well spent on a decent female specific saddle.0 -
The Marin is a horribly specced bike. The Kona and GT are fairly similar in spec. I would go for the GT"Melancholy is incompatible with bicycling." ~James E. Starrs0

I started out on a £300 saracen Mantra1, 17" frame. I'm 6ft. It is a heavy bike mind but can take a good hammering. It's classed as an extreme xc. 8)The creator had a mastertape, but he left it in a cab!0
