forks - coil or air

Its not quite as easy as the title suggests.
I've got totem solo airs on my quake. Apparently there is someone looking to swap their totem coils for some airs to save weight. *ignoring any weight savings please* we don't want to let them know theres little weight saving...
I know the coils are a better fork but i'm not entirely sure they're right for me.
I do everything on my quake. as in xc trail centres (cwmcarn is a fav and can clean the climb on the quake), to fort william dh, to big freeride drops. I liked the idea of being able to change air pressures in the air forks depending on little sag for xc, more sag for dh and not much at all for freeride hits.
I've only owned air forks so not sure on what adjustments i can make on the coils to change between my different riding styles. can they be easily stiffened for freeride but then find a happy medium for xc/dh?

Coil forks cannot be stiffened at all without changing the spring (Uturn changes travel and spring rate though). Preload sets the fork sag.
Have a look on you tube for the SRAM vids on set up - you can fiddle with the damper to vary the ride.0 -
alright, think i could live with that.
i guess freeriders just use harder springs then?0 -
Pretty much, they may also have the damping changed so it ramps up more toward the end of the travel.
I'd keep the solo airs, changing springs before each ride is a bit of a faff. Making sure everyhting is clean before you open the fork up, chances of damaging threads.Intense Socom

hmmm i dunno now. i've heard so much about the coils and its a chance for a straight swap...
need to have a bit of a think.0 -
On Pike's cant you control compression damping which is sort of like controlling 'stiffness'?0
-
The Pike's adjustment is low speed compression damping - this controls fork dive when breaking and cornering, bobbing, not big hits.
Some Totems and Lyriks have Mission Control damping which offers both low and high speed adjustment. The IS versions have an integrated internal high speed compresion stack.0 -
on the coils ther is external low compression and external rebound but the air are way more adjustiable and you will find climing harder on coil0

Depends which model.0
