Hey
I have been looking around merlins and CRC and noticed that there prices have not changed.
I know its only small but if they are selling thousands worth of stuff everyday then they will be minted by the end of the month.
Just to let people know its 15% vat not 17.5%

It was only announced yesterday, i guess they could be dragging their heels?0

Does not come into effect until next week.
There is also ZERO chance of retailers updating all their prices to reflect this extra 2.5%.You only need two tools: WD40 and Duck Tape.
If it doesn't move and should, use the WD40.
If it shouldn't move and does, use the tape.0 -
....it also doesn't come in until 1 December.. but then we have 13 months before it rises again.
Let's see if everyone drops prices on the 1st!0 -
They have to drop there prices by law.
But knowing them they will raise there prices by 2.5% and bob's your uncle, no price change. lol0 -
UK based retailers with stores in Ireland (M&S, Debenhams) have been milking this one for a while.
Prices in both €uro and £ at an exchange rate that might have been approximately correct 6 months before, but with movements in the currency well out of date just signalling a rip-off in progress.
Usual argument is that it is too hard for them to change it and the stock was bought too long ago....yet if I went into a store now I'd still see the same markup.
As a result I buy in the UK a lot of stuff and simple avoid being ripped off, a lot of people who live in the northern counties of the Republic go to NI the same.'Twas Mulga Bill, from Eaglehawk, that caught the cycling craze....0 -
Wiggle have applied the 2.5%
Most will probably take the vat cut as extra margin.0 -
They do what is favourable to them.
If an increase is announced, prices will be raised the very same day.
If its a decrease, Prices may never be lowered....at least where i come from0 -
I have a feeling they will drop the price as needed, then slap it all back on again calling it "a charge for the logistics of the VAT reduction"...Giant TCR advanced 2 (Summer/race)
Merlin single malt fixie (Commuter/winter/training)
Trek superfly 7 (Summer XC)
Giant Yukon singlespeed conversion (winter MTB/Ice/snow)

Given the fact that both Merlin and CRC offer some pretty spectacular discounts anyway, I think you'll be lucky to see any change.
Moon on a stick, you lot...0 -
I could care less if I save a pound, but I think the bike shops on-line will not pass the savings on and keep it for them selves.
But yes wiggle has done it already so lets hope others will follow suit.
While the Bike shops on line are making an extra thousand or so off everyperson who could have saved that pound, its not very customer focused.
Just thought I would discuss as days are early and time will tell.0 -
Surely (using my limited economice knowledge here) the cut in VAT has been made in order to increase public spending? In which case it would have been pointless for the goverment to implement it if it was not obligatory for the retailers to pass it on to the customers?"Melancholy is incompatible with bicycling." ~James E. Can anyone answer this?
If the retailer bought the stop last week (and therefore paid 17.5% vat) and he sells it next week (at 15% vat), who pays for the difference?
BTW, I think when CRC (et all) start selling at rrp, then we can expect a 2.5% decrease in prices.Stumpjumper FSR 09/10 Pro Carbon, Genesis Vapour CX20 ('17)Carbon, Rose Xeon CW3000 '14, Raleigh R50

no one, it makes no difference to the retailer, just some different math in the PC/till."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

From http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7748353.stm
The VAT cut from 17.5% to 15% comes into effect on 1 December for 13 months, although there is no requirement for shops to drop prices in line with the cut.
Then the even worst news http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/7749074.stm
VAT has been cut from 17.5% to 15% - a level it is set to stay at for 13 months before returning to 17.5%.
The Treasury document says it will rise to 18.5% in January 2011 - but this was left in by mistake, a spokesman said.
The note - signed off by Stephen Timms, the Financial Secretary to the Treasury - outlined how VAT would "subsequently increase to 18.5% in 2011-12".0 -
I would rather them not cut it if thats the case 18.5%
We save pence, 1p on a mars bar and like 3.00 on a 500 tv, whats the point, but then again I am not alone, people in the government say its a waste as well as its not helping us spend.
OHHHHH 3.00 on a 500 tv WOW thanks brown you da man..... NOT0
