I can't seem to stay hydrated properly atm. i'm drinking lots nd lots of water, have tried isotonic and hypotonic drinks but after about 20 mins i pee it out and then tar to feel dehydrated again.
i dont know whats going on. I drnk a good pint of water before bed, and have another pint ready if i get thirsty (which i normally do) but hen STILL wake up feeling dehydrated and have a full bladder.

i'm starting to get headaches now which i'd put down to dehydratio too :(

an ideas whats wrong with me? i HATE going o the docs, especially down here at uni.

Get down the docs and have a blood glucose test, sounds like symptons of diabetes. You can also get tested at the local Boots/large Pharmacy.
I think the test will involve a small fingerrprick to obtain a droplet of blood which is placed on a test strip inserted into a computer and a reading obtained.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

    Hi

    I agree with redvee.

If your drinking alot you wont be dehydrated so the headaches are a symptom of something else

Before i was diagnosed with diabetes the amount i was drinking was reaching 8-10 litres a day quite easily and i couldn't stop peeing. sound similar.

Are you also feeling lathargic/ struggling for energy, sleeping more than usual get lightheaded/dizzy? If so id get to the docs as soon as possible. You will just have to give a pee sample and have a fingerprick nothing to worry about.

When a friend of mine was ill before being diagnosed with diabetes his mum was feeding him lucosade  I didn't have such bad synmptoms apart from the usual passing of gallons and drinking gallons.

  • im not that bad i dont think.

i'm gonna stayaway from caffeine and sugar for the next few days to see if that helps. plus i'm properly properly stressed out atm :(
  • I would like to know what your outcome from this was

Diabetes test, they usually take a blood sample and then give you the results after a few days.

Sip throughout the day. Hammering a pint of water is not going to be absorbed, which may explain your full bladder. But obviously you wouldn't want to rule out the docs.

sorry i didnt mean i downed a pint of water

    i mean i'll have finished a least a pint before bed :)

feeling a bit better today, but always seem to have a dry mouth.
  • No offence but if the problem is bugging you then you should go to the doctors. You don't feel right and you're saying you're stressed - don't let it get to you, go and sort it out! I didn't like going to the doctors at uni either, they didn't know me as well as the doctors at home which put me off.

Go and see them, you'll probably feel better after going - there's no point adding the stress of feeling ill on top of what is already stressing you out.

And lay off the stimulating drinks..... get some camomile tea

Just intrigued as to how you think a pint of water that you 'hammer' is going to get into your bladder without being 'absorbed'??

(I still think the OP needs a BM checking at the least - off to the docs I'm afraid)

Dr_Death, if I go on a 2 hour mtb ride without fluids, lose slightly less than 1 pint of sweat, then drink a pint of water straight after, is that pint of water going to replace all the fluids lost during the ride?

He means from a physical point of view, as the water has to be absorbed out of the gut and into the bloodstream before it enters the bladder via the kidneys.

I think what happens, and old Death will no doubt clarify, is that suddenly increasing water intake stimulates the kidneys into producing dilute urine, so a steady intake can increase the amount of water kept in your sytem.
  • sudden increases in liquid increases gastric emptying = less uptake compared to drinking the same amount over an hour or so.

It's ok. It wasn't a real question. I do a lot of mtb'ing and take in a lot of fluids. And I know that if I empty my 3L reservoir before I ride I'm still going to be dehydrated at the end of it all. That was what I was explaining in my post. It was misinterpreted by dr_death.

How are you doing now bigbenj_08?

Sudden increases in liquid do indeed lead to increased gastric emptying but given that no water is absorbed in the stomach will have little effect on the amount absorbed. The gut is very efficient at absorbing almost all the fluid you put into it (hence you don't often have runny poo). Your kidneys essentially autoregulate based (mostly) on sodium concentrations and feedback from blood pressure sensors, too dilute and you pee more too conc. and you pee less.

If you consume the fluid before exercise then it will dilute your blood as it absorbed and get filtered out by your kidneys and stored in your bladder ready for excretion, if you were to consume a pint of water after exercising and loosing a pint of sweat then you would probably still feel thirsty as there are the increased loses associated with respiration and energy production to take into account....

If the OP is feeling polydipsic and polyuric due to diabetes (as some of us have hypothesisied) then this is due to a fuck up in his autoregulation. As blood sugars are too high this spills over into his urine leading to sweet tasting urine (the very old way of testing for diabetes). This excess concentration within the proximal tubules of his kidneys draws extra water into the urine to dilute it, leaving him with a relative dehydration. He counteracts this by getting thirsty and drinking more.

p.s. did you ever get your blood sugar checked???
