There are some good ones about, like tacx. In an ideal world you would be able to try some out but thats often not possible. I bought a cheap one from a LBS for 120 quid made by giant. Its ok but I really should have spent a bit more, lol!

They're great for winter weather. Get on the bike, put some music on (which you cant do on the roads obviously) and just start pedalling :)

I on the other hand went for a real cheapo . about £30 from SJS.
It's basic , which I hope means that it will be dependable.
Seeing the leaves flying horizontally past my house earlier today I set it up in the kitchen , put on a CD and did a stint. I think it could be the first of many unless the weather improves significantly soon

  • if you stick with the main makes - tacx, miurra, cyclops, etc, etc then there aint any bad ones.

Just choose your price/features and off you go (they're all as boring as **** :) )

  • personally I'd rather be out on the road braving the weather than stuck in the shed on the turbo trainer. My coach always told me that if you can ride a bike go ride a bike. The only reason I bought my fluid 2 was that I broke my collar bone and after 3 days of sitting I was so bored I figured I may as well be bored whilst pedalling!

The fluid 2 was quite pricey at 140 but along with the sound deadening mat and turbo tyre it was the quietest option. It was pretty good really and it definitely served its purpose but its the first time in 7 odd years of riding that I've had one and I don't think I'll use it again over being on the road.

But thats just me - they do have their benefits for sure I used it with the carmichael training systems dvd to do time trial interval training so the 5 week change in riding helped my fitness overall I think.

That said it's now for sale so ppm me for details!

I'd have to argue with that one :) but otherwise some good points.

As above - there aren't really any bad ones any more. A very good investment if you are prepared to use it. And the whole 'if you can get out on the bike, get out on the bike' line is a horrible one.
Quite apart from the wonders of ice (chance of ruining your winter in one instant), sometimes there really is nothing to replace a turbo. I'd love to get out on the bike for a particular training session I do, rather than staring at my cellar walls, but I don't have five 11% 3km long hills near me with no descents between them, and no traffic lights. Maybe you do - lucky you..
  • I'd also get a psychiatrist or psychologist as well, to put your head back together after the boredom sends you mad!
