Good Cycling Towns with narrow streets

I'm after examples from the mass consciousness of bikeradar users of Cities and Towns in Europe or elsewhere in the world where they have cycle infrastructure that works in narrow streets.

I'm interested in how this might be applied to retrospectively improve the narrow streets in some of the historic towns and cities in the UK, where the street patterns have evolved from pedestrian and horse ways to the canyons of traffic they are now...

One way is to rid the streets of cars, but I'm particularly interested in the other ways of doing this... I don't want to suggest too much, but this might be reengineering of streets to somehow fit in bike lanes (but what if space is at a premium), and I'm sure there are examples where speeds are slowed to give cyclists a chance... But, every and any idea, experience or observation is welcome! :)

Any photos, locations to look up on google maps, anything would be helpful for this....

Thanks very much !! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
