Winter Shoes/Boots

I'm thinking of getting some winter shoes/boots, and would be interested in hearing people's opinions of them. How long do you use them for, is it only the coldest two or three months, or are they more like a three season item (I tend to ride about 7:30 Sunday AM, so wear toe covers most of the year!).
Do they feel heavy on, or not much different to normal shoes?
I use Look pedals, and have found the Northwave Fahrenheit which take these. Are these any good, any other recommendations?
Thanks
Edward

I use the Northwaves with Looks - they're not that much heavier than normal road shoes that you notice. I've never had cold toes or feet since, just wear them with a pair of Woolie Boolies.Carlsberg don't make cycle clothing, but if they did it would probably still not be as good as Assos0

I use Northwaves with SPD SL's.
Agree with SD on the weight.
I tend to use them mid Nov to early March roughly below 10C. Anything much above that and the gore linning makes for very hot sweaty feet..0 -
Another vote for Northwave-great value for money!

Whilst winter boots help to keep your feet warm, they're not high enough to stop the water running down the front of your shoes in the rain - overshoes are still needed in the wet. Northwave are OK, but Sidi, Gaerne are better and the Lake winter boots the dog's!Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0

I'd agree that choice of socks and overshoes might make more difference than the shoes themselves! This year has been MUCH easier since getting the highly recommended Endura overshoes - it's so nice, coming in from a wet and cold ride with muck from the road getting all over me, to take off the overshoes and find my shoes perfectly clean and intact. A mate of mine has had shoes ruined by repeatedly getting wet - they smell like they are decomposing apparently!'07 Langster (dropped one tooth from standard gearing)

I've always sufferd with cold feet but bought some Northwaves for this winter and I'm very pleased with them. Haven't used them with overshoes 'til this Sunday when it was -2° and I was Snug. Don't know if I even needed the overshoes.0

i was tempted by a pair when i was buying a new pair of overshoes today, decided i couldnt really justify the outlay but i am commuting... but overshoes are just so much cheaper and mean i can use my carbon soled shoesBMC TM01 - FCN 0

I have the Shimano boots which I find great. One tip is to go for the MTB version and fit a cheapo pair of MTB SPD's instead of your ordinary pedals. The nice thick rubber soles are definitely warmer and so much easier for pushing your bike uphill when there's just no grip! Happened to me more than once last winter and I was SO glad not to be skittering around on carbon/hard plastic soles with protruding cleats....0

I suffer from cold feet and bought some PRO shoe covers, the thin ones, and my feet stay warm and dry at 3 degree temps. They also do a thick neoprene version for -15 conditions.
So I can't see the point in winter boots.0 -
As long as you get winter boots or shoes a size larger than you normally do, and wear decent winter socks, you create warm air space and your feet will benefit. Boots too tight will result in cold feet.0

Thanks for all the advice, I might see if I can pick some up in the sales early next year rather than splash out the full price.
Cheers

Already in the sales. Why suffer till the winter is half over.

I use the Diadora Chili Road Extremes which I picked up for 50 quid last year. You can still get them at good prices, depending on your size of course, such as :

Pick these up for a fraction of the new price:

i just wear 2 pairs of socks .. i have these ultra thin nike dri-fit ones that have no sole padding etc so almost like a thick tight (pantyhose for our american friends) material. ... then if nec. wear assos windproof booties.
the socks and booties will cost about £40 and can be mixed/matched to suit needs ...0
