What MTB gear do you have on your MTB SS?

I' m interested to build an MTB singlespeed for myself, for touring rather than racing. Have no idea what gear ratio to start with. Please advise.

If you still have a MTB with gears, give it a go in one gear for a week or two. Thats what I did, the only time I changed gear in the last 4 months I rode a geared bike was when I hit the gear lever on bikeracks.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.
  • 26" wheels = 32 x 16 unless it's hilly then 17 or 18 on the back.

    29" wheels = 32 x 18 unless it's hilly then 19 or 20 on the back.

I use 32:18 on the inbred, which gives you a fighting chance in Sheffield and the Peak District, useless on the flat though.

The unit has 34:17 better on the flat, harder on the hills.

The lava dome has 38:20 great on the flat, knee destroyer up hills.

Oh my god I have big problems dont I, no beard though.

Ive got two geared bikes, although the main reason I bought one, is that has sliding dropouts, so will convert nicely to ss. :D:D:D
  • Thank you. Very useful.
    More comments welcome.

Also, would you prefer lower gear for winter? Snow and all that?
