Quite pleased about this, hope its not just hot air to appease the public. Lots of really silly comments though, worth reading for fun imo.

Police bosses and council chiefs have teamed up in a bid to stop the growing menace, starting in Shirley.

I wonder if we know anyone who could be responsible for the epidemic of crazy cycling in Shirley

I know Shirley quite well (the area not the woman  ) and its 90% kids on bikes there. The itchen bridge is 99% adults of all the pavement riders and its 50:50 in the city center precinct.

I think they want to be like me but are too shirtless to do it on the roads :lol:

I've got an image of Shirley Temple and Shirley Williams riding a tandem.

This is what this thread should have been highlighting .........

“However the paths in Shirley are very wide and there should have been cycle lanes put in years ago – this would be better.

“There is no provision for cyclists along the road, which is extremely busy and dangerous.”

Perhaps council officials should stop whinging and start constructing a usable cycle infrastructure.

hmm I wouldn't say Shirley high street is particularly dangerous but the pavements are very wide, and could easily have cycle paths on them.

It's a very classy place to hang out.....

Not so much on them, as using the part of them by the side of the road, level with the road. On them just makes them footpaths complete with pedestrians, dogs and debris which achieves very little.

Shirley road, from Iceland down to the roundabout at the town end, is a pretty quick road if theres no traffic there. I can rattle down there in no time, but from 1pm to about 7pm it fills up with traffic and drivers trying to pull out of the parking spaces down the side, side roads etc, also drivers doing uturns etc, and this all slows you down.

In the end I dropped it from my return route from work and only used it in the morning. What should have been a 5 minute journey became a 25 minute one. So I can see why some weave around on the pavement.

I do hope they dont oneday put in cycle paths - I nagged the council several times for a road lane, even when I found out they were preparing for resurfacing shirley road but its always the same answer. The road would have been far less congested imo had they tried this out.
