Bikes on trains

Hi folks,
I had my bike booked on Virgin trains for travel between Aviemore and York.Due to broken toe in two places unable to ride at present.Rang Virgin trains to cancel the bike reservation thinking they would have a spare bike place to offer someone else.Courtesy I thought to let them know.Needn't have bothered, they weren't interested and said just turn up without the bike we don't need to know really.
Should I be surprised at the response?? I think not sadly.
