    Pedant alert:

In Japanese cuisine, sushi is vinegared rice, usually topped with other ingredients, including fish, various meats, and vegetables. Outside of Japan, sushi is sometimes misunderstood to mean the raw fish itself, or even any fresh raw-seafood dishes. In Japan, sliced raw fish alone is called sashimi and is distinct from sushi, as sashimi is the raw fish component, not the rice component. The word sushi itself comes from an archaic grammatical form of a word that is no longer used in other contexts; literally, "sushi" means "it's sour".

    Pedant Alert.

I tell you what, lets swap

Girl friend for The Prince - think that's fair enough - Because when she took me for Sushi (the raw fish kind and in a I read 'The Sun' type of way I refuse to call it anything else) she told me the exact same thing.

Its like the whole 'why do you call a vacumm cleaner a Hoover?' its a vacuum cleaner....

In the name of all that is holy I hope she doesn't look at this site...

Mmmmmmmm sashimi. AKA the good bit.

Aaaaanyway, DDD, the revised list looks good, just beware of one thing - if she was antsy about the blender, a course to show her how to cook something may fall into the same category.

Not wanting to rain on your parade or anything, I'd love a sushi-making course!

Jash, you are right it is actually called sashimi (or whatever) I was just being common...

Perhaps I should be more culturally aware and whatnot.

L_i_T is that advice to all the hopefuls (most of whom are in your fan club) on how to win your heart?

The sushi making course - I better make sure its sushimi and not sushi thanks for pointing that out Jash, my flippant nature might have seen me waste my money - is a gamble but she loves cooking (can't cook better than me, I'm the dogs) and adores sushi (the raw fish kind that is named wrong in England).

The more I think about it the more I think (I hope) I'm onto a winner.

    And modest with it!

I don't know if you cuold get a course that was exclusively sashimi... making sashimi is basically just cutting up raw fish! Although, knowing the japanese there'd be a very

Does your GF only eat sashimi? The sushi-making kit would be for sushi as well as sashimi, I would think...

Well I'm sure there will be a number of guys (is Don Don coming lol) at the SCR X-mas party who will be buying you drinks and 'laying down' their best chat-up line, which is now likely to suggest a date involving a sushi making class.

As for my GF sushi/sashimi making kit, I'm guessing its both. Sushi is the one with the rice wrapped in some green thing with something either on top or in the middle right?

    Yep!

All this is 'sushi' - nigiri (slab of rice with something on top), maki (small roll with seaweed on outside), there are also inside-out rolls with rice on the outside and various others.

    sushi-mori1.jpg

This is sashim - note how it's just raw fish sliced!

Wow, thanks LiTs, I think I'm going to have to look at her sushi/sashimi kit and make my decisions on the course.

Thanks Jash for the clarification. Was only joking about the swap.
