wheels on a turbo...
I've got one bike, with two sets of wheels, a nice set of ksyrium SLs and the less nice stock wheels that came on the bike.
It's winter so I'm using the bike on the turbo during the week, and getting out on the road on the weekend.
I'd rather not wear out the rims on my nice wheels over the winter on the road, so I was thinking of sticking an old tyre on the mavics for the winter and riding the cheaper wheels outside.
I know the turbo will knacker the tyre, but surely the bearings and freehub of the mavics will stand up to turbo use fine? Or, at least, they'll fare better on the turbo than outside on the wet and salty roads.
I know that ideally I'd get a turbo specific wheel, but until I see one cheap second hand I figured I'd be better off using my nice wheels inside. Is this the right decision, or should I ride my nice wheels outside and use the cheapo wheels on the trainer?
No room for a turbo specific bike or winter bike, unfortunately!
Any advice or opinions appreciated...

No reason at all not to use nice wheels on the turbo - it won't do them any harm at all.
Whether Ksyriums are nice wheels and worth getting precious about is a whole different topic :twisted:0 -
I found that the side loads you put onto the axle and bearing when clamping a wheel in a turbo can cause some issues, loosening the bearing cups etc. Nothing too disasterous, but worth being aware of.
I bought a cheap Shimano wheel (R550) for turbo duty at about £50 and then I have no worries about changing tyres etc, just use a tyre that has gone past it's useful life on the road.Complicating matters since 19650
