  • Ive been looking at the Garmin Edge 705, so I guess around about that price - but it seems a bit obvoius to go for that straight off, without getting any other reccomendations!
  • I have the 705 and think it is very good and considering the functions, pretty good value.

However i haven't used it much for route finding for mountain biking. The time i did i used memory map to plot the route and uploaded it which worked fine but just put a line on the screen in the middle of nowhere. I have the road map not the topo maps (which i guess would be better for anything offorad), but i hear the topo is a bit rubbish.

Its also the most accurate heart rate monitor i have used and the cadence kit is excellent.

Any of the garmin units are great. I have the 305 with heart rate and cadence sensors and use it with memory map software to plot off road routes. I dont personaly find that not having the on screen map makes much difference as the Garmin topo software is not great. Memory map uses proper OS maps so is very accurate. Software is also very easy to use.

It is just about the best, most versitile product on the market. It's only downfall is the mapping that you get with it.

Have a chat with your local outdoor shop. They should be able to recommend the best software.

If you aren't too worried about the cadence and heart rate monitor functions, then there are cheaper products that are just as good for route mapping etc.

Have a look at the Satmap Active 10 if you are just after mapping.

I've seen this get some great reviews and you get proper OS maps.

  • Thanks all. If the Garmin maps for off road arent great then I guess thats not the way to go.

    I appreciate your input
