What do people think of this? http://www.evanscycles.com/products/specialized/roubaix-comp-2009-road-bike-ec016909
It seems to be exactly what i am after. Although the wheels RS10's would have to be upgraded.
While ti £1699 price tag is much more than i want to go to i do thankfully have a 10% discount coupon that will soften the blow.

I just looked at one of these in Evans tonight - I thought it looked pretty good. I agree you'd want to change the wheels and tires. Interestingly my LBS told me that most of the higher end Specialized Tarmac and Roubaix 2009 models are a lot stiffer than the 2008 bikes so aren't quite as comfortable as the old models. Cycling Weekly did a test on the new S-Works Roubaix and agreed it was stiffer but they spoke very highly of the Roubaix Comp.
I think if I could push my budget to this sort of level - I'd try to stretch to get a 2008 Trek Madone 5.2 Performance which seem to be on interest free credit at around £1800 (instead of £2300). It's Ultegra SL and was the sportive bike of the year in 2008 apparently. People who have them speak very highly of them on here.
Good luck

Nice bike but i can't believe that for £1700 you get RS10 wheels which retail for about £75 :?
So that is £1700 plus £150 - £350 for decent wheels straight away :shock:He is not the messiah, he is a very naughty boy !!0 -
yep, for that money you want at least RS11's!!
Putting RS10's on anything above a £500 bike seems a tad tight on the manufacturers part. Seems they try to flog you a good frame with bottom of the range wheels.
Second to the frame and forks, the wheels are the most important.
Proved this by upgrading my really poor alex da16's to fulcrums. Amazing difference!Mens agitat molem0 -
It's a good bike, but I think you're paying a lot for the frame.
Personally I would spend less on the frame and more on the groupset.
But it's a very good bike, I have a Specialized, for 10,000 miles it's been problem free and hopefully for as many more. Also got a pair of Mavic Aksium on it, cheap but super durable and reliable wheels.. don't know these RS but maybe they're not as bad as you think... and you can always use them in winter/wetleft the forum March 20230 -
Lovely - upgrade the wheels and it will provide you with years (and miles and miles) of riding pleasure.
You never know, you might be able to negotiate more than a 10% discount in these dark days.0 -
nice bike - a great ride
as said above - you are paying a lot for the frame - but then, it is an excellent frame!
be cautious though - I built an S-Works roubaix with carbon centaur, Campag Eurus wheels and ITM finishing kit for around £1800 as the (outgoing year) s-works frames get sold off in late december.
centaur being roughly equal to ultegra then I got a better frame and £450 wheels for about £100 more through self build.0 -
too expensive IMO.
You're getting a very high quality, but not particularly light frameset. Very high quality but not particularly light carbon framesets are widely available on complete builds for around £1k.
You're then getting a 105 group. Fine, but again, a bit on the heavy side. Also, the complete group is less than £300, so you're wondering (allied to the cheap wheels) where the £ is going here.
The wheels are probably pretty good knowing Shimano, but yes the retail price of them further reinforces the sense that this bike should be at least £300 cheaper.
Groupset: £300 max
Wheel, tyres, tubes: £120 max
Components: £200 max
So you're paying £1k+ for the frameset,.
But if it rides nicer than other bikes ...0 -
Planet X!!!
Some amazing prices on their site at the moment, Carbon frame and dura ace gruppo for£900 at the mo.
Dealt with them many times and they're good guys0 -
Have to agree that this is not a very good deal. I got a Scott CR1 with 105 and Aksium wheels from Westbrook Cycles 2 months ago for £1050. So that's the same groupset and better wheels for £480 less than this, allowing for your 10% off. The frames are not comparable in their nature, the Roubaix's apparently less racy and heavier, but more forgiving etc., but I see nothing to justify the price difference.
You can surely get a much better deal on an 08 bike? I'd take a higher spec over the latest paint job any day of the week.0 -
Actually you could get a Planet-X Ti Sportive for 1750 with Ultegra - and you wouldn't need to upgrade anything right away. They've just got a couple of 9/10 reviews in the major bike mags.Titanium is probably more exclusive than carbon.
Planet X are still doing their special offer on their Carbon bikes too - looks like a great buy.

I would ask them to upgrade the wheels for the same price. It's a buyers market.0

in my opinion - that makes the roubaix look even better value!0 -
Thanks for all your comments.
While I agree that yes maybe yes it is slightly overpriced, considering the wheels supplied I have one problem. I LOVE IT!!
I went to Evans Waterloo Cut this morning to see it in the flesh and with the exception of the super priced bikes of £2500 & over for me it just stood out from the rest. It has specs that are better than what I have now and the ride position looked more relaxed and not as aggressive as others bike that I saw.
I have tried to persuade myself to do what others have suggested and go for a higher spec (I.e planet x , etc.) and I did set my mind on getting one of the Focus range.
However while they are great bikes they just leave me cold and if I am going to spend quite a lump sum i must at least have some attachment to it. Also as this is my first "proper" road bike purchase i feel that it will be better to buy in store rather than online.
So i have to wait until February ish until I can afford it plus the wheel upgrades and extras and hopefully I can negotiate a better deal.0 -

Incidentally, have you considered shopping around for a 2008 Roubaix? I reckon there will be bargains aplenty...0 -

Sadly i do not have the funds yet. If there are any 2008 bikes left early next year then would help but i won't hold my breath0 -
If you truly love her, you must follow your heart and ignore what everyone else says0

exactly - get it bought!
you won't regret it - the roubaix is still racy - but also comfortable - it's a great bike!
the spec is good I think - it is full 105 - crankset, brake caliper the lot - a lot of bikes are advertised as "105" or "ultegra" - but when you look they have cheapo crankset or unbranded calipers which detract from the quality of the groupset.
the wheels aren't ideal - but are at least half decent and if you save to upgrade them over summer then you will have a perfect bike for a number of years comfortable use.0 -
Also the weight isn't too bad at 18lb 15oz/8.6 Kilo.
Not the lightest but average i guess for that price bracket0 -
I've got a 2008 Specialized Roubaix expert and love it, next years comp model looks great.
I spent a lot of time earlier this year trying to decide which new bike to get and some brands like Planet -x do offer some great value bikes but personally i feel like you know what your getting with the likes of specialized and trek.
So if you can afford it get it as im sure you'll love it0 -
I just tried this bike out at evans - awesome - where did you get a 10% voucher?0
-
I've got RS10's on my £600 bike, they're not too bad, the only difference with these and RS20's is the double-butted spokes, if you upgraded that way.
But if I were you, pay at least £300 for proper mavic wheels...0 -
Is it worth asking the shop how much it would be to put decent wheels on it at purchase?
Unless you want the RS10s as spares this might be cheaper than bike plus wheels.

tried that before with my last purchase and they flatly refused.0 -

when i did the london bikeathon this year they send you some Evans discount vouchers.0 -
Still,
I have the feeling frames are getting overly expensive and bikes are sold with lower end groupsets (although perfectly fucntional).
Personally I think the groupset is more important than the frame. The majority of the workload is done by the groupset, the frame is a set of tubes whose stiffness is often overestimated as a parameter. Also the weight, often a factor of 100-200 grams makes a huge difference in retail price and obvoiusly the heavier is always the strongest and most durable (unless it's made out of crap)
It is a lovely bike, but it's the frame you are buying, I would rather spend less on the frame and dress it up in Dura Ace if you like Shimano.
Personal opinion of course.left the forum March 20230 -

Hi,
Did you get the Spesh Roubaix Comp in the end? How are you getting on with it.
I am thinking of buying one(moving from flat-bar roadie to drops).
If you decided against, why and what did you get instead of?0
