Waterproof coat repair.

I was knocked off by some b*****d last week. New rear wheel, helmet and a bit of fiddling with the front mech and I'm ready to get back on the road.
However I've got a tear in my Altura Night Vision jacket at the shoulder and I was wondering if it can be repaired. It's only about 4cm long. I tried a patch for my tent but it didn't stick.
Anyone have any suggestions or do I need a new jacket?

  • American tape?

If it's good for Michael Madsen in Resevoir Dogs, it's good enough for me!

If you were knocked off, why isn't the person who knocked you off buying you a new jacket?

You can get Goretex repair patches. Not sure what that jacket uses for proofing, but the Gore patches should work on most stuff.

Completely amnesic to the events. If they stopped they didn't stay until my missus arived with the bike carrier.

I would at this point like to give a big thank you to Bell bike helmets. I have a small bump on my head and around 6 hours of amnesia. My helmet is completely egg-shelled.

Thanks for the tip on the Gore patches. I'll chase them up.

i've used these on walking gear (most of my cycling gear is lidl and aldi these days so i wouldnt bother) work pretty well make sure gear is clean and dry first

sorry to hear about the accident
  • I have used small patches of nylon (cut from any available source) glued on with silicone glue used to repair Neoprene Waders. So far that has worked just fine. Used that method to repair my Endura Event jacket.

Just be sure to clean the repaired area with alcohol solution and give the patch plenty of time to cure.

  • If it is torn all the way through, duck tape on the inside (sticky to the outside world).

It's simple, it's almost hi-vis, and it really works.

I split the bum of my last pair of waterproof trousers tore the seam when it caught on the saddle. The tape lasted really well and was still waterproof.
  • This is how we repair spinnakers (small rips).

Get a bit of replacement material, smear a small amount of silicon sealant (the stuff you use in bathrooms) on the coat, spread it very think with the edge of a credit card and apply the patch.

If you stitch it the stitches will leak and probably pull through the thin material.
  • Speak to Altura. They will happily repair it for you.
