I've often wondered whether it would be feasible to work in Paris and commute there by bike (see what I've done there, Spen666?)
So I've entered (paid the deposit, actually) the London to Paris next June: http://www.londres-paris.com/site/html/ ... _entry.php
I entered this last year, but work commitments meant I couldn't do it. Which was just as well, as the work commitments had meant my training commitments had gone down the drain. I have a mate who did it in 2006 and possibly last year as well, and raves about it.
Who's up for it, then? Quite pricey, I know. But if you have doubts, shell out the deposit and then treat it as a donation to charity if you have to drop out.

Hmmmm, I was looking at doing this for a firefighters charity in may...
It does say for amateurs... it is for amateurs, right? No-one will be going quickly...
Yeah right.
I'l be dropped by the time we get to Dover.

I have done it a few times - it is not bad at all really. Lots of non-cyclists do it, along with a few full on lycra clad nutters!
You will find people of your fitness level, LIT your fitness level should be quite high riding a fixie from Ealing into the city every day....
last time I did it, I cycled from Bristol to London to join up and go to Paris - that was a blow, I won't be that dumb again.0 -
Hmm, very tempting. Good timing too, it's Brun's birthday on the Sunday.0

Looks a great trip.
I really have this urge to hit the open road on my bike and cycle to Lands End or something like that. Not an organised trip. I wondered how feasable it is to carry a tent and sleeping bag and everything one needs? Has anyone done anything like that here?0 -

I did it a few years ago - I lived in Cambridge and decided to go to the Norfolk coast (Cley, Holkham, Wells). Very hard work, even on the flat - weight of tent + basics was allot on a mountain bike. I had good weather for the week, but it was hard living - very enjoyable when I was younger, but I would not do it again.....now that I have money, kids, dog and car!
Well worth trying it for a weekend though and want to get closer to the earth!0 -
Well I would have signed up if they took a credit card I actually have. Stupid Amex. Must find mastercard.
:roll:0 -
Amex is rubbish - no one take it....not even Platinum! Or they have a surcharge for using it!! I am gonna drop mine and go with a "known" brand....0

LiT, I did a charity ride to Paris in July and it was all a bit easy due to having to stop every 15 miles for the slowcoaches to catch up. That and the tailwind This sounds a bit more challenging and fun but OMG the price :shock:0

Yes, I was going to ask you what you thought! I won't be doing it on the Bowery...
How much do these things usually cost if they put you up and feed you then? The one I was looking at you had to sort all that side of it out yourself and this seems like an easier option...0 -

I did it with six friends last year. We did it on our own, not one of the charity events, and it was quite cheap.
We took the overnight ferry to Dieppe, so the first night accommodation was sorted, ~£35. We stayed the second night in a rented farmhouse north of gourney-en-bray. That was ~£15 each with breakfast in bed. Accomodation in Paris was ~£50 each, and then the Eurostar home was another ~£50ish. It was about £180 + food and drink.
We're planning on doing something similar this year, maybe to Gent/Brussels.0 -

Would love to do this, but that's the weekend after the West Highland Way Race (95 miles, 14,760ft ascent - running) and I'll be in no fit state to ride a mile, let alone however many this is.
No I will not MTFU. You should try running 95 miles up and down hills before saying that :twisted:0 -
New bike AND cycle to Paris. Aha! I've hit on the perfect solution...
And Jen, I can't believe you're even considering running 95 miles. I jogged (not ran) 10 miles last night and my feet hurt.0 -

Jogging is what non-runners call running.
You, my love, if you can run 10 miles, are a runner.
(and I've just heard that I've progressed from the waiting list for WHWR to start list! Woohoo!)0 -

Congratulations!
Yeah, but it was with my housemate who's barely 5', so the pace was, let's say, 'sedate'.
And this not-heel-striking is harder than it sounds.0 -
Now *this* is heel striking (how do I put the image into the post?)
And my long 'runs' are about 12 minute miling - now that's slooooooow.

then take out the / before the first [
Well yes, I agree, that is heel striking...
I jog like that too, but I'm trying to change.0 -
Ach, doesn't work for some reason...
Anyway, London to Paris? Who's in?0 -
There you go!
Right-click the image, click 'copy image location' and paste that with the img things around it.
EDIT: And I'm still up for this, expensive but easier than organising it myself. Just need to locate my mastercard.0 -

I agree. It is a shedload. It's quite a bit more than last year, I think. Having not done it myself, there's a limit to what I can say about it.
I wonder how much events like the Marmotte or the Etape are by comparison. Cheaper, I'd guess, but I wonder by how much.0 -

while the missus is quite forgiving about the shiny things I buy with my own money, I don't think I could justify that to myself let alone her
Especially when we've just shipped something like 6k on builders and stuff for the house :xPurveyor of sonic doom

Looks appealing especially with included extra's such as:# DVD of the event. T Shirt.
# Full technical support, rolling road closures, escorts
First off I'd be interested to see that DVD of the event T-Shirt........I'm thinking they should have been seperate bullet points.
As for the last one that is REALLY generous Unless of course they are referring to those lovely tin boxes turned out by the factory in Dagenham.......0 -
Should the fact that you appear to have emboldened 'escorts' and 'VD' be considered a freudian slip?0

10 miles?? Seriously? That wasn't a typo, not meant to say 1.0 miles?
Hmmm, you didn't strike me as that insane.
Chapeau, m'dear.0
