Just wondering what's happend to De Rosa. You don't see people riding them anymore. Furthermore, my dealer has stated that he's stopping stocking them, as they just don't sell. I see quite a few shops were offering £500 off the Idol just to get them out the door!

just not popular in the UK. V.popular in Italy but the competition is getting more fierce. At one time it was De Rosa vs.Colnago vs.Pinarello. Now you have Trek/Giant/Focus/Ridley/Look/Time/Specialized/Canyon/Wilier just to name a few.

I wanted a De Rosa for ages - almost bought an Idol, but was put off after hearing about their disatrous after care service (which a lot of people apperntly have needed). Maybe others have been put of in a similar way?

Their after sales service is very poor alledgedly, and you're likley to need it from what many people have said. I wanted a De Rosa for years, but wouldn't buy an Idol due to this.

Are you saying that it's their frames that need after sales service? Not sure what sort of service after the sale that De Rosa itself could provide for a frame other than a new one,
if you get one that's got a major problem? Or are you talking complete bikes? Even then I'm not sure how De Rosa can help. Would seem to me to be a shop problem for whomever you bought it from and they would go back to De Rosa if need be.

The frames have been known to have a habit of breaking.

Well, so much for my De Rosa and electric DA. Maybe I'll go get that really, really, red,
chromed lugs and fork, steel Cinelli I saw at the local shop. Maybe that will hold up under
    my old fat *ss.

When I looked around for advice, a number of people seemed to be having problems with frames breaking, paint peeling etc. I agree my contract would be with the supplying dealer, but it seems that De Rosa don't offer fantastic back up to the dealer network. That was enough to put me off.

The Idol is a lovely looking frame. But, difficult to live with. They have had probplems with the intgrated seat screw. Also, their UK importer is not very helpful at all!

I think you may have answered you own original question!

  • I think the biggest problem is that they are overpriced (and mostly ugly, apart from the King 3)

My De Rosa Team has been a great bike since I bought it in 2005.Not sure it was worth twice the cost of an equivalent Trek but still, it looks great and the ride quality is superb. So go and buy one, right?

I've always hankered after a 'neo primato'. Classic good looks!

If not a flippant remark I'd suggest that's plain wrong : ' beauty is in the eye of the beholder' and all that . Classic geometry for the most part . Where's the 'ugly' element ? The 'bought in' parts ? The gruppo ? The wheels ?

Overpriced ? No more so than any other quality Italian frame methinks .

I think they look great . Every De Rosa I've ever seen has been the epitome of thoughtful taste coupled with a flawless finish . And the De Rosa downtube lettering looks ever so superior . They look a 'cut above' to everything else on the road to my eyes , including Colnago and Pinarello etc..

    No , I don't have one . Just the usual desires , y'know . :P

P.S. In the local races I've seen in Italy they're very popular too and look as cool as only the Italians can look . Should you ever catch a Ryanair to Milan you'll discover it will dump you at Bergamo ( a bonus : what a fine town that is ! ) and on the bus bombing down the autostrada to Milan proper you might spy the De Rosa factory on the right . Easier at night actually as it has an Illuminated sign .

Flippant, perhaps. Wrong, no that's just your opinion.

I think the current range is generally ugly (except King 3) in particular the Idol (the integrated seatpost with curved toptube really doesn't help). IMO the De Rosa logo is terrible too. Not on about gruppos or anything else, just the frame. They are I will admit, finished well.

Overpriced, yes they are here in the UK at least. You can get custom Viners for less than the King!

    (edit: I'm ignoring steel bikes)

Call me stupid if you like but I've just ordered a King 3 frame. Yes they are more expensive than a Viner Maxima but I just love the understated cool that De Rosa have cultivated.

I wouldn't do that, the King is a very nice bike. Hope you enjoy it. :)

Yes you're right I'm mostly just poking fun. I've just checked the 2009 catalogue I have here and they're not that ugly
