Back in september I had a little fall on the way to work and did this......

But then a few weeks later, I had some crazy operation at the local hospital where they drilled some holes and used some big string and buttons (its called a open clavicle reduction using tightrope preceedure apparently!) and it then looked like this....

  • ha nice work! They should have done that to mine which I broke in August - now all back together - but have a very odd shaped collar due to it healing a bi overlapped.

due to this and my penchant for marmite it has earned me the nick name of twiglett!

  • nice one gurt lush - i did exact same thing last october, now back to as near to 100% as i'll ever get. v painfull for some time after, but well looked after by Glos Royal Hosp then mrs vitesse.....
  • How long before considered 'recovered'?

Been 4 weeks, uncomfortable rather than painful. Consultant says review in 2 weeks when will consider surgery, unpicking things if necessary.
There's no such thing as too old.
  • I was in a sling for 6 weeks, then a further 2 weeks of no sling trying to use my arm to carry a cup etc. Then I started having physio sessions 2 times per week of 30 mins on the NHS which was ok.
As I had broken my collarbone on 30 Sept 07 and had surgery 6 Oct, then the physio, I chose to take further physio - 7 Jan 08 i had 2 weeks at a residential physio/convalesant place. This was because I pay into a 'fund' for this type of thing. The physio was very intensive and got good movement back into my shoulder.
The surgeon & physio would not let me out on my road bike until the middle of Jan - I did use the turbo one handed for about 8 weeks prior to this....
Now, I have almost all of the range of movement & strength back into my arm and this is likely to be the best it will be. The little movement etc that I don't have I think I am unlikely to miss. I use the gym 2-3 times a week and this year had a (for me ) very reasonable seasons racing...

Gert_lush - that musta hurt like feck when you did it
Mind you - the solution that the docs have come up with is pretty cool 8)
What's it like being a bionic biker :?:

What do I ride? Now that's an Enigma!
  • I was in a hardcore sling that involved lots of straps and velcro and stuck to everything for 4 weeks I then started physio once a week to try and get some flexability back. I almost have full range back, but can't put my arm behind my back very well. The worst thing was the muscle wastage my right arm was sooooo thing after 6 weeks of nothing!

its still not back upto strength yet and I should be availding anything tasking on it for another month or so when I hopefully have my final xray, but may start some small resistance training before then. As for biking I nhave been on the turbo a bit and have done some small runs to work which technically i probably shouldn't as if I fall off again it is probably still weak but its just sooooooo frustrating!

Having an Op that had only been around at that hospital was pretty cool..I am almosty unique :) .

Although think this technique has been used in the states a bit an athletes for a while
