Posting whilst at work

Do most contributors post whilst they are working or do you wait until breaks? I'm interested as to how your employers view internet use whilst at work. Mine take a dim view.

I found out today I can post here on my mobile phone

Been reading here for ages through my phone, but didn't realise I could post too.

As for internet use tho, my place takess a dim view. Someone's just "jumped before they were pushed" when it came to light he'd clocked up the most internet hours in the organisation - 21 hours in one month.

Work was getting in the way of my posting

Not bad is it, that's in an organisation of several thousand!

I keep my internet use down to a few minutes a day, BBC news or the weather forecast, they're not going to be bothered about that. But forums, facebook, etc. are a big no-no.

I limit myself to a few visits to news sites and the like, although my colleagues seem to spend so much time on MySpace, Friendster etc that I'm amazed any work gets done. If I visit here, I don't log in and use the generic password that IT, in their infinite wisdom, have left active.

When I worked full time last year I seemed to spend most of my day on the internet. TBH I probably spent too much time, and is probably a reason why I've got such a post count.

I think it might have been an issue if I hadn't have got my work done. I did a lot of experimental work, which often meant sitting there watching temp/pressure gauges in the lab, I nearly always had a laptop with me, I watched a lot of races live streamed - Paris-Nice, Ronde, Ghent-Wevelgem, most stages of the Giro, or played music. My boss knew what I was doing, and didn't have a problem as long as I got everything done on time.

The place was shutting down anyway, and a lot of staff seemed to spend a lot of time drinking coffee in the "Amenity Area", I think my team was the only group to actually continuely generate work until the shutdown.

Now I'm back at Uni, I surf too much and post too much with my iPhone in lectures

  • I never post while at work.

redd - I like students like you - they amuse themselves and keep quiet while those who want to engage in what I'm on about do so....

As I more or less please myself how I do my job, fitting in a bit of Forum/Internet activity is not a problem. If I visit a colleague, they are invariably on the 'net, doing personal stuff. The only ones who aren't are the secretaries, but I am sure they fit it in somehow.
As long as the job gets done, and done well etc etc...

Weirdly I still seem to answer more questions than everyone else....Apart from one Chinese dude who I can't understand no matter how hard I try (it took me three months to work out what he meant by "delta etch" - ΔH)

As long as it's not crystallography I can normally work out the answer to any question.

I might post now and then at work, but I work in IS and it is part of the system to make sure that all connections work etc.
Well that is part of what I do, the rest is very very very dull usually.

  • As long as my work gets done on time and to the expected quality my boss doesn't give a rats arse at the end of the day.

He knows that I like riding and will ride in most mornings, I say most mornings he has been known to wake me up with my head on my desk/keyboard after pulling an all nighter.

He even lets me get out of the office early if there is no more work at that time. My commute goes from 6 miles to 25 then. Great thats all I can say.

As long as you play fair I cant see it a problem doing what you are doing whilst at the office place of work .
The doctor said I needed to start drinking more whiskey. Also, I’m calling myself ‘the doctor’ now

    Respect duly given.

I think my employer has a "fair use" policy - not a problem as along as I am doing my workload.
  • Mine too - I had to be a little, um, creative to get them to unblock this, but their policy is as long as I do what I should be doing it's all OK.

I just had my performance appraisal and nothing was said about my use of the internet, so I'm carrying on as usual. Having said that, redundancies are being announced in December, so if it comes up then it will be too late anyway!
