What is the difference between 5501 and 5600 shimano 105 hubs?
Weight and subsequent strength just?
I assume the light weight skinny one is more for racing and the other qould be more suitable for commuting?

One's a newer design than the other (which has no bearing on strength / weight).

They're pretty much the same. With Shimano numbering, the first number is the group (5 is 105, 6 is Ultegra etc). The second number is the version, so 5501 is 5th version, 5600 is 6th version. The last 2 numbers are minor revisions or different versions, for example with the cranksets xx00 is a standard double, xx50 is a triple.

105 hubs didn't really change a lot between 5500 and 5600. The weight difference will be pretty negligible, you won't notice any difference at all really. Buy the one that's cheaper. :D
