Bike storage v marrage dilema

Okay, it's nearly time for the new arrival :D The Langster will be mine tomorrow. However where it is to be stored is causing some disruption. When the road bike arrived wife insisted on it going in the garage. However to get around this I went and brought a turbo trainer which sits in the conservatory and over a period of a couple of weeks the bike gradually got left indoors on the trainer over night. Eventually it was accepted that it would stay there perminantly and it looks very nice. The problem now is that if I try and do the same with the Langster either the sofa, dining table or kids table football is going to have to go :? Any suggestions on how to get around this one? If not I am afraid that the Langster will be in the garage with the MTB and the Pub Bike :(

  • Put the wife in the garage?

Also, I have calculated my FCN as 12...although I have no idea what that actually means.

Alternatively, put some plush carpet in the garage, some ambient lighting, central heating and a plasma TV. That way the Langster will feel like it's well loved (as will the pub bike and MTB) and the conservatory can be kept clear for post-ride newspaper reading.
  • hang it up and claim it's an art installation! Couldn't you annex the conservatory for bikes...

I have mentioned this to her but whenever I do she goes a kind of red ragey sort of colour and mumbles something about loving those bikes more than her and the kids

Could the sofa/table/footie table have an oil related "accident" and need to be replaced? Only, hey, it's a credit crunch (or whatever) so you need to watch the pennies and therefore can't afford to replace it, especially after just buying a new bike and all ? Oh and speaking of which, now we have some room in the conservatory...

Just out of curiosity, why do you want the bike in the house? Is it a beloved family pet or something? In contrast, I'm quite happy for mine to live in the garage as it means I can disappear for a while and "work on the bike" if needs be.
Today is a good day to ride

hang it up and claim it's an art installation!

To be honest it could legitimately be exactly that!

I've had so many non cycling friends come round and just stare at it, and then go on about how gorgeous it is, and I'm talking about people who would not dream of getting on a bike, and would take no time to even look at any of the rest of the herd.

Incidentally, mine is in the dining room, and very lovely she looks too 8)

Why not get one of them wall brackets, and stick it up on the wall somewhere - won;t affect your floorspace then, and you can usually fold them back against the wall (The bracket) when need be.

Off topic slightly, which turbo trainer have you got Harry, and do you have anyway of measuring distance covered/speed etc etc?

I second your first point. The bike looks great. When we've got boring dinner guests I always sit facing the bike so at least I can look at it a day dream about sunny days riding through the countryside.

On the trainer point I've got the Minoura VFS-GR. It's quite good and very quiet but to be honest I get bored out of my mind and hardly ever use it nowdays. It's just a rather expensive bike stand now

Sorry forget to answer you're question about speed etc, no I've got no way of measuring it but I would imagine that you could fit a computor on to the rear wheel couldn't you?

take everything out of the garage, then put all your bike stuff in there, with the plasma tv, stereo, workstand etc, old leather chair, etc etc etc, then move in there yourself and let 'them indoors' do what they like.

My road bike is worth more than our car and would be much harder (impossible really) to replace so one of our 'bedrooms' is my bike room. Tools, kit, bikes all live in there - and the missus doesn't mind a bit :D

I could do that but it would mean one of the kids would have to go :? Actually the teenager's a bit of a pain these days. I'll tell him he's lost his bedroom but is welcome to the garage if he wants it :)

I bet she does - she just does not tell you......

On another note - My shed (it is like a fecking warehouse!) has a sofa in it, Tea facilities including a fridge and everything I need for bike maint + motorbike maint.

I only kept my expensive TT bike in the house - just because of the value of it (it has been sold to pay for a new kitchen :-( ). I used to keep it on a ceiling mount in the utility room....Where the puppy now sleeps..

Well only slightly, I mean I could live without the Pub Bike and could probably also manage without the MTB. It would be difficult though :( But obviously as far as the Road Bike is concerned...well.....I could live without the missus

So let me get this straight...you have a road bike (check), a pub bike (check) an MTB (check) AAAAAAAND a new Wangster (check)...you have a garage AND a conservatory (double check)

And you want our advice about YOUR storage issues...I have 3 bikes, the wife has two and we live in a small third floor (stairs no lift) two bedroom flat.

Are your diamond shoes a bit tight hmmm? Is your wallet too small for your fifties perhaps, hmmmm?

I used to have a similar problem - 5 bikes of my own, one the wifes and two each for two kids (one MTB, one road). I sold my MTB, Bianchi road bike (only used when wet as it had raceblades), and Ribble (531 used in winter) and replaced the three with an Enigma Etape, so I'm down to 3 (kept my best bike and old Raleigh fixed). Now have enough room to hang them all in the garage :D

What's wrong with keeping your Langster in the garage anyway?
Carlsberg don't make cycle clothing, but if they did it would probably still not be as good as Assos
  • Embrace the garage as THE cycling room - make it the bicycle paradise. Clean it out, store your bikes properly. Find space for MORE BIKES. Buy them, hang them up with the others.
She won't go in there. She won't notice.
    Enjoy.

NO! The Garage is for bikes and their riders (To fettle and fix and build and polish...um......cough.......I mean I don't polish.....cough) not KIDS! They touch things with there gressy hands(not saying your kids have gressy hands but I never let my young cosins go into MY garage).

Litts, mate, if things are a bit tough, you should have said.
