Goggles or streaming eyes?

My eyes stream like a small spring when I'm out on the bike, and I'm noticing it even more now that its getting colder. I often find myself squinting and relying on luck to get the front wheel in the right place when I'm riding. Its not good, and one day I'm going to have a bad off because of it.

Plus I often find myself holding back on riding because of it.

So I wear some glasses but they don't help, they sometimes focus the air and make it worse!

So is the only answer some riding goggles? I tried some on the other day and they were lovely!

The issue is that I don't wear/have a full face helmet, is this a problem? Won't I look like a bell-end with goggles and a normal helmet on? Does anyone else wear goggles, and wear a normal helmet, or has anyone heard of it before?

Yeah they look OK, a bit like the old, old Oakleys, you remember the ones that completely wrapped round your eyes, I think they had foam around the inside edge. Now that would do the job but I can't find any? All the new Oakleys leave a gap inbetween the inside edge of the frame and your cheek, which is no good.
  • Had this problem and bought myself some Rudy Project Rydon.
  • I just wear a cheap pair of cycle sunnys I bought from wiggle and use the clear lenses. They work very well and I don't suffer from air streaming into my eyes. I am the same as you and can't ride without any eye protection as my eyes stream. I also ride a lot in the forest and worry about branches and dirt getting in my eyes.
  • I use Rudy Rydon 2's, they fit closer to the face but don't provide as much wind protection as the Evil Eye.

M:Wear d'Arcs. They wrap right round, I've no problems with mine. Goggles are a bit overkill for general use, they tend to get a bit sweaty and start smelling.

Hi, you could have a look at these, which are used for a different hobby - airsoft, a whole different story. I would have thought fogging up would be a big issue with any goggle cycling though. When you tried them did you go far?

  • I suffer from the same problem. I think someone on here recommended the bolle clear lens safety glasses so I duly bought some from screwfix. They have been excellent and even look ok (don't look like safety glasses 8) ). There is some airflow but you need that to keep them from misting up. They wrap around as you would expect from safety glasses so good protection in the rain mud and from any stones etc...absolute bargain...and work really well..

Same problem here. It's like when you "uncork the seal" at a drinking session...everything is fine until they start running and then you cannot stop!

I got the DHB freebies from wiggle...work for me, and seme £2.99 Aldi jobs that are great...even at 40mph on the roadie!

Got some expensive Specialized glasses, still steam up but clear pretty quickly. They do however sort the air flow thing out. Was riding at night the other evening without them and really noticed the muck and in particular the air flow in my eyes. Might just be worth trying some different glasses rather than looking at full goggles. I would have thought you'll have worse problems with misting up if using them for XC / trails.
It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

    I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
    Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result
  • Thanks for the advice given - The airsoft ones make you look like a sniper!!

I tried some goggles on in Stif the other day so haven't been out on the bike with them, so don't know how much of a problem it would be with them steaming up?

I saw some on CrC the other day, I think they were adidas ones, and they had a strap which goes round the back of your head, that might make it a bit better.

I suppose its trial and error, there isn't really a definate solution.

But I did see a pic of a rider in MBR the other day - He was wearing a pot like helmet, one that is more dirt than XC, but it goes further down the back of your head, if you see what I mean? Now if I could get one of those, then wearing goggles wouldn't look as daft?

I'll have to get my helmet, and go to the LBS and try it out with some goggles and see what I think!

The goggles aren't that expensive though, so it wouldn't be a total bummer if it didn't work out long-term. and the goggles felt great, they weren't vision impairing, and were very light.

Try putting some washing up liquid on your glasses if they steam up. you just rub it in as if you were cleaning them, i do this and it works.

postage might add a few quid but they look pretty cool (edit) postage is $5
i spent all me money on whisky and beer!!!
  • The Bolle ones on screwfix look great and for the price are unbeatable - 3 different shapes so should find one that will give you the coverage.
As the previous poster says they just look like sunny's but must provide good coverage or wouldn't qualify as 'safe'. Goggles will be far too hot and sweaty for XC (Try snowboarding in a pair on a spring day - you cook!)

  • Welding goggles. Never have a problem ever again after the first ride
  • Yeah the bolle ones look OK but they don't look to have the coverage I need.

I'm going to have another trawl through CrC and see if I can find the ones with the strap round the back of your head.
  • Check out the lighter MX goggles

I tell you what - I had another look through these pages and the set of glasses on the homepage at the top left (the small picture) look perfect, they seem to have a big enough lens, they come with an optional strap, they are clear, but more importantly they have the foam insert on the inside which looks like exactly what I need.

    These

Almost certainly it will be them, thanks culture, good man!

Just had a look on the screwfix website and thing I'll get the glasses too!

How about the Bolle blast goggles and blast visor? That would probably solve your problem!

Seriously though, if the goggles solve the problem and make you look like a c0ck then I'd say let everyone laugh at you. There's nothing better than shooting past someone whose just laughed at you :P

  • When I was about 9 some kid at the school bus stop was throwing sticks and stones at his mate. One of the sticks hit me in the left eye and ripped my tearduct open. Blood all over the place and I was driven up to Inverness that night to get sewn up by a specialist. Apparently I'm really lucky that I don't have an ugly droopy lower eyelid. However, come cold weather and wind my left eye does water (and will do forever apparently) which never helps at speed. I got me some clear glasses but I dunno if they'll really make a difference.

At the very least they'll stop me having to blink every time a raindrop hits me in the eye. And hail...

These on Screwfix look cool, and they have a strap so shouldn't fall off when looking down to check your gears ;) Not particularly cheap, but not exactly Oakley prices either!

FWIW (I'm not a MTBer but a road rider), I have the same problem with streaming eyes. I bought a pair of Endura glasses with interchangeable lenses from EBC - think it was £30-35. They're nice and light, don't fog up (once you adjust the nosebridge to suit) and can be used in all conditions. I like them a lot. For more rigorous needs, I suppose you could get one of those headband contraptions to attach to the arms?

  • I wear glasses for short sightedness. Would these Screwfix glasses fit over my normal glasses? Or does someone make prescription lenses for MTB glasses?

As long as the lenses are not too curved they can put prescription lenses in any frame. I know a couple of people with prescription lenses in MTB frames, just pop in to any optitions and they should be able to sort you out.

I kind of agree Steve - If they do the job then stuff how they look, but I don't want to look like a complete tool! With my p-i-s-s- pot helmet and goggles!

Damn you Blackspur, that helmet looks absolutely mint! I bet it costs a bomb but more annoying for me I bet it doesn't come in a big enough size. I'll investigate!
But if it did fit, or if I could find a helmet like that in my size, that would push me further in the direction of buying some goggles.

Plenty of freeride/4x riders ride wearing p-pots and goggles. I wouldn't worry what people think of you.
