As this is a geek discussion, I was wondering if the Tesco torch is a direct drive or regulated?

Just had a quick look on the Cree website. The Datasheets for X-Lamp XR-C (guessing that is what is used - could be wrong) show a typical forward voltage of 3.5-3.6VDC and and a Max of 4.0VDC so 3 NiMH in series won't over volt the LED but 3 alkaline cells will! Just remember that when the NiMH go flat, you can't pop into the nearest shop and stick 3 duracells in to get you home.

My dad has got me two tesco torches for me to pick up when I go back to the UK for Xmas. Does anyone have the Cree part number of the LED so I can get the relevant data sheet off Cree before I get the soldering iron out.

    Cheers

Can't see anything but 'CREE' on the LED unit, but where the spring attaches at the bottom, it says LX-MY2503A Rev1.0, if that's any use.

    Hmmm,

Doesn't look like a Cree P/N. Is there nothing that looks like this:

    from RS

    http://uk.rs-online.com/web/generalDisp ... &file=CREE

    from Cree datasheets:
