not sure why the cake stop forum has moved out of cake stop and appears to have colonized Commuting so that we no longer have many posts in Cake Stop and no commuting threads in commuting

What would you like to talk about Spen?

    In commuting section commuting issues.

i've no issues wuth what people want to talk about.
It just seems odd to me that the cake stop forum has decamped on mass to the commuting szection to continue its threads of a cake stop nature.

So, you object to things going off topic? Or people making posts of a jovial nature?

    For example:

    (Sorry, my mouse slipped)
  • I think we have a fair few posts on commuting over here still, the SCR thread is (loosely) about commuting, for example...

I also think it's nice that people can chat and have a laugh on commuting. Also, cake stop is in road. Where would the MTB'ing commuters go to chat?

    Here you go Spen.

I told a driver to "go f*ck himself" last night on the way home. Not very constructive, but he was going down the "get off the road" line, so I thought I'd cut him off mid sentence. He looked mildly shocked!

The usual response to these is that if enough people wanted more threads on topic X to justify us moderating in that direction, they'd create enough to render the moderating unnecessary.

I've just had a quick sift through the first of page of Commuting General, and there's nothing that sticks out to me as belonging somewhere else. I'll keep an eye on it, though.

AMERICA BUYS ALL THAT CHANGE BULLSHIT
BARACK Obama swept to victory last night as millions of Americans lapped up all that bullshit about change.

'Change... Yeah... Sure'The Illinois senator made history as the first black American to become President and the 44th man to win the office with a lot of vague platitudes and an army of creepy spin doctors.

He told a crowd of 250,000 supporters in his home city of Chicago: "Remember, change is something that happens in the middle of the night when we're all fast asleep and very often the next morning no-one can tell that anything has actually changed.

"I promised you change you can believe in, I did not promise you change you can actually see."

He added: "You believe in Jesus don't you? Right, but have you ever seen Jesus? Exactly. Just making sure we're all on the same page."

    ."

I learned everything I know about rhetorical devices from Alanis Morrisette.

Threrefore, its the only one I know, so it has to be my favourite. I'm assuming that low grade sarcasm doesn't meet the "rhetorical device" threshold?

I've always enjoyed the irony so readily apparent in her seminal track.
    To quote Ed Byrne:

"The only ironic thing about that song is it's called ironic and it's written by a woman who doesn't know what irony is. That's quite ironic."
  • Another ironic thing about Alanis is that she is one of the few female pop stars that you didn't really want to see naked in a shopping mall.

The "irony" in that song is what I like to call "ironical", that is, irony for people who don't really know what irony is. Rain on your wedding day, free rides when you've already paid etc. - ironical. Writing a song about irony when you don't know what it is - ironic.

Maybe she's just way more clever than we think and the lyrics are really an elaborate double bluff that will be revealed on the song's 25th anniversary or somesuch.

And now for the topic: I don't see many non-commuting threads here myself, but, speaking as a MTB commuter, I do feel that a "cake stop" forum that's not part of Road might be more attractive.

Ooohhh a bit harsh maybe ?

the police told me that people didn't want to see me naked while out shopping but that doesn't stop me from stripping off in the frozen food section in my local Tesco

Nah. See, I have a reading speed of up to 10 words a minute and I am capable of sifting through the off-topic stuff within 30 minutes of arriving at the forum, so there's no need. This way is so much more convenient.

Pretty irrelevent where you post nowadays. Just seems to be the same old "Ooooh someone with no lights/What lights should I get?" and the old classic "Please wave at me!" Whichever sub-category you go into...

Pretty ironic, people do not seem to get she was being ironic about the irony involved already...This could go on.

Alarmingly, I don't think she was. I think she was trying to be clever, whilst providing deeply perceptive social commentary.

Look, she's Canadian. Many Canadians (and Americans) regard Monty Python as quaint English slapstick comedy, but are happy to stick with the three stooges when it comes to that sort of comedy.

We are cultures separated by the same language.

    NO....

Is it the invasion of Commuting or the desertion of Cake Stop that gets your goat more?
  • I hereby deny migrating here from Cake Stop, on account of having never been there. Honest, guv!
